2019 NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds, Overview & Picks

Written by on August 5, 2019

We’re just a few days away from the first week of pre-season action in the NFL. This is an exciting time for fans because they can start to see the beginnings of their franchise’s plans for contending in the coming season. Sports betting on these games can be very unpredictable, because if the starters play at all, especially in the skill positions, it is more likely that they will take the field for a series or two, perhaps a quarter, before returning to the sideline. Then the reserves come onto the field, working hard to make it through the first round of cuts but also showing why they are on the bubble when it comes to landing a spot on an NFL franchise. None of the point totals for this week’s games is higher than 37 points, because offenses tend to struggle mightily — particularly once the reserves come on. Point spreads are tight, rarely larger than the three points a home team is favored in a matchup viewed as even by the books. We have each matchup as well as our thoughts for the smarter NFL preseason betting choice.

2019 NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds, Overview & Picks

Thursday, August 8

Indianapolis at Buffalo (7:00pm ET)

  • 2019 NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds: Colts -2
I see Josh Allen getting a lot more action in this game than Andrew Luck, which means that Buffalo’s first team offense should get a lot more action. Will that matter, given the stout Colts’ defense? It will, once the Colts’ starters hit the sideline. I like Buffalo to win and cover.

N.Y. Jets at N.Y. Giants (7:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Sam Darnold against Daniel Jones means that the Jets will have the offensive advantage in the early going. Then the Jets will try out the likes of Davis Webb and Trevor Siemian under center. Even so, I like the Jets to win and cover.

Washington at Cleveland (7:30pm ET)

Washington has Dwayne Haskins, Colt McCoy, Case Keenum and Alex Smith at quarterback. That’s a lot of talented arms — but then the Browns will have Baker Mayfield, at least to start, and revamped talent on both sides of the ball. The Browns enter with enthusiasm and momentum, so I like them to win and cover.

New England at Detroit (7:30pm ET)

Matt Patricia has a lot to prove in his second season in Detroit, against a New England team that does not show a lot of interest in preseason games. I don’t expect Tom Brady to play more than a series, so I like Detroit to win and cover.

Atlanta at Miami (7:30pm ET)

Atlanta should win this by 30, even with reserves on the field. But crazy things happen in Miami. If a line shows up for this, I would like Miami to cover.

Tennessee at Philadelphia (7:30pm ET)

I don’t expect either Marcus Mariota or Carson Wentz to play more than a series. That means that it’s down to the running game, and Philadelphia has the more physical units up front. I like Philadelphia to win and cover.

Jacksonville at Baltimore (7:30pm ET)

Nick Foles vs Lamar Jackson should make for an interesting first quarter. After that? I expect the defenses to clamp down, and the Ravens have the better overall offense. I like Baltimore to win and cover.

Carolina at Chicago (8:00pm ET)

  • 2019 NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds: Bears -3
Expect more play out of Mitch Trubisky than out of Cam Newton, and that Chicago defense is ironclad.  I like Chicago to win and cover.

Houston at Green Bay (8:00pm ET)

This could turn into a track meet, as neither defense was all that impressive in 2018. Deshaun Watson vs Aaron Rodgers could make for an intriguing first quarter. I like Green Bay to win and cover.

L.A. Chargers at Arizona (10:00pm ET, NFL Network)

I’m surprised that a line is available given all the changes in Arizona — and I’m really surprised to see the Chargers as underdogs here. I don’t usually bet big on preseason, but it’s hard to see the Chargers not rolling over the Cardinals’ new system. I like the Chargers to win and cover.

Denver at Seattle (10:00pm ET)

Pete Carroll is perhaps the NFL coach who pushes hardest to win preseason games. The Broncos are working Joe Flacco in to lead their offense but at his age it is hard to see him playing more than a series or two. I like Seattle to win and cover (if a line opens up).

Friday, August 9

Tampa Bay at Pittsburgh (7:30pm ET, NFL Network)

Big Ben might play a series — while Jameis Winston might play the first quarter. Winston has far more to prove, and the Steelers’ defense can be porous. I like Tampa Bay to cover.

Minnesota at New Orleans (8:00pm ET)

The Saints aren’t going to take anything easy after that NFC Championship debacle. I like New Orleans to win and cover.

Saturday, August 10

Cincinnati at Kansas City (8:00pm ET)

Cincinnati has a new head coach — which means lots of things to iron out, but also the chance to make a statement. I like the Bengals to cover.

L.A. Rams at Oakland (8:00pm ET)

Oakland is rebuilding, while the Rams are emerging from their Super Bowl hangover. The Rams’ defense is too stout to lose to the Raiders, though. I like the Rams to cover.

Dallas at San Francisco (9:00pm ET, NFL Network)

  • 2019 NFL Preseason Week 1 Odds: 49ers -4
The Cowboys have a new offensive coordinator and won’t have Ezekiel Elliott at tailback. I like the 49ers to win and cover.
