Thursday, September 5

Green Bay (+3) at Chicago (O/U 46) (8:20pm ET, NBC)

Aaron Rodgers’ back is still a major issue for the Packers, who come in with a new head coach. The Bears return with a solid defense, but they still have an unproven Mitch Trubisky at quarterback. Can he outduel Rodgers? I don’t think so. Give me Green Bay to cover.

Sunday, September 8 (1:00pm ET games)

Tennessee (+5.5) at Cleveland (45.5) (CBS)

Marcus Mariota is trending down, while Baker Mayfield is trending up — and he has Odell Beckham Jr. joining his offense. The Cleveland faithful will be raucous. Give me the Browns to win and cover.

Baltimore (-5) at Miami (37) (CBS)

Expect a hot, humid afternoon down on South Beach. Expect some Fitzmagic from the Miami offense, because it is still in the early going. However, Baltimore should run the ball all over the place with their spruced-up O-line. Give me Baltimore to win and cover.

Buffalo (+3) at N.Y. Jets (39.5) (CBS)

These two teams are young and looking to finish second behind New England. Sam Darnold for the Jets is a slightly better second-year quarterback than Josh Allen, and Le’Veon Bell is a better running back than LeSean McCoy. With this game in Gotham, give me the Jets to win and cover.

Kansas City (-4) at Jacksonville (52) (CBS)

The Jaguars have not done much offensively in the preseason. They do have Nick Foles at the helm this year, but Kansas City has upgraded their defense, while Jacksonville stood pat — and their offense could be stagnant. Give me the Chiefs to win and cover.

Atlanta (+4) at Minnesota (47.5) (FOX)

Which defense will do a better job against a high-octane offense? Minnesot has the experience, while Atlanta has the youth and health. I’m not sure Kirk Cousins can lead the Vikings to a big road win to start the season. Give me Atlanta to win and cover.

Washington (+8.5) at Philadelphia (45.5) (FOX)

This is a huge line for a divisional rivalry game in a season opener. The Redskins bring tailbacks Derrius Guice and Adrian Peterson — but they’re starting Case Keenum at quarterback. Philadelphia should have the pass rush to shut Keenum down, but I’m not convinced that Carson Wentz is ready for a huge game. Give me Washington to cover.

L.A. Rams (-3) at Carolina (50.5) (FOX)

The Rams have to fly to the East Coast and play in a humid stadium for the early game. They have to do this while still suffering from Super Bowl hangover, after an unimpressive preseason. Sure, the Rams have the talent edge on paper, but I like Carolina to cover.

Sunday, September 8 (4:05pm / 4:25pm ET games)

Indianapolis (+7) at L.A. Chargers (44) (CBS)

Andrew Luck just retired, which means Jacoby Brissett will lead the Colts’ offense. The Chargers won’t have Melvin Gordon, but they will still be able to run the ball. Even so, the Colts have a lot of weapons on defense, and the Chargers almost never start the season well. Give me Indianapolis to cover.

Cincinnati (+9.5) at Seattle (43.5) (CBS)

The Seahawks will pound the ball with the running game all over Cincinnati — and then have Russell Wilson hitting Tyler Lockett when the Bengals aren’t ready for it. Seattle has a passionate home crowd, and the Seahawks play much better there. It’s a big spread, but I like Seattle to win and cover.

N.Y. Giants (+7) at Dallas (45) (FOX)

Dallas is likely to open the season without Ezekiel Elliott, and Eli Manning has always played very well for the giants in Dallas. He will have Saquon Barkley leading the running game. If Dallas wins, it will come in the final possession, so I like the Giants to cover.

Detroit (+2.5) at Arizona (47.5) (FOX)

No one knows what to expect out of either team. New coach Kliff Kingsbury and rookie quarterback Kyler Murray could put up huge numbers…or they could flop. Matthew Stafford will torch the Arizona defense and lead the Lions to a convincing win. Give me Detroit to cover.

San Francisco (+1) at Tampa Bay (49.5) (FOX)

Jameis Winston has a coach who trusts him in Bruce Arians, while Jimmy Garoppolo returns to the field after his big extension. San Francisco has the better defense, so they should pull this out on the road. Give me San Francisco to cover.

Sunday, September 8, 8:20pm ET

Pittsburgh (+6) at New England (51) (NBC)

Prime time means Super Bowl ring ceremony, which means no hangover. Pittsburgh beat the Patriots back in December, so Bill Belichick will be geared for revenge. This should be a defense-heavy game — which favors the Patriots. I like New England to win and cover.

Monday, September 9

Houston (+7) at New Orleans (53) (7:10pm ET, ESPN)

The Texans just shipped Jadeveon Clowney to save money — and then shipped out two first-round picks and a second for a left tackle to protect Deshaun Watson’s back when he drops back to pass. The Saints’ faithful are always raucous in prime time, and Houston’s O-line will still be building chemistry. Give me the Saints to win and cover.

Denver (+1) at Oakland (43) (10:20pm ET, ESPN)

Derek Carr seems to be healthy, while Denver is going back to the future by bringing in Joe Flacco. Denver has the better pass rush, so the question is whether you think Carr can outduel Flacco. I don’t think he can, so I’m going with Denver to cover.
