Lamar Jackson won the NFL Most Valuable Player award for the 2019 campaign, putting up a terrific season with the Baltimore Ravens. He led an offense that put up points at a prolific rate until the Ravens were derailed by the Tennessee Titans in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs.
The MVP award is only based on regular-season performance, and going into the postseason, Jackson had led the Ravens to a 14-2 record, without a loss since Week 4. Quarterbacks tend to dominate MVP results; the last time a non-quarterback won the award was 2012, when tailback Adrian Peterson of the Minnesota Vikings won the hardware.
Take a look at the current NFL betting odds on the MVP for the 2020 season.

How hungry will Patrick Mahomes be after winning a Super Bowl and getting a huge extension? How hungry will the rest of the Chiefs be to repeat? It’s hard to repeat as league champions in any sport. Yes, the Chiefs did pick up Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the draft from LSU, and he will add an element of the unpredictable to an already high-octane offense, and they did address some defensive needs, but we won’t know until the first few weeks of the season have gone by to see how hungry they are. Given how hard it is to repeat, and the low value Mahomes offers, I might look elsewhere.

Lamar Jackson is near the top of the MVP odds list as well, but that shouldn’t be a surprise. The Ravens have plenty of motivation for 2020 after their shocking loss in the playoffs to Tennessee. They added wide receiver James Proche from SMU in the draft, and they added Calais Campbell to their interior defense, to help stop the sort of running production that the Titans were able to get in their playoff win. The Ravens were built to score, and then to grind time off the clock given their heavy run emphasis, but they also have explosive wideouts and a quarterback who can sling the ball down the field with strength and accuracy.

Tom Brady and Deshaun Watson are both a little overrated in this odds list, frankly. Yes, the Houston Texans won the AFC South again last year, but then Bill O’Brien continued to mystify Texans fans by dealing wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins away for nothing of comparable value. Without Hopkins as an option, the Texans will rely heavily on Will Fuller V, but he hasn’t shown the sort of stamina to make it through a 16-game regular season without injury.
Brady makes his debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year, and Rob Gronkowski comes out of retirement to join him, but the Buccaneers also have the Saints and the Panthers in their division. Tampa Bay has some solid skill players around Brady, particularly at wide receiver, but will Brady wait long enough in the pocket for the slowly developing routes that Bruce Arians likes to run? Will Brady mesh with his teammates after a virtual summer? I don’t see the Buccaneers doing enough to garner an MVP for Brady.

Dak Prescott is an interesting sleeper pick. He has the skill players around him in the Dallas offense for the Cowboys to put up points at an historic clip, and he doesn’t have head coach Jason Garrett making oddly conservative decisions in the game plan anymore. Prescott’s fortunes really rely on the Dallas defense, which lost stars at all three levels in free agency and hasn’t done much to replace them via free agency.
