Baltimore at NY Jets Week 7 Betting Lines & Expert Prediction

Written by on October 22, 2016

Nothing seems to be going right for the guys in Baltimore and New York these days. Both the Ravens (3-3) and Jets (1-5) are mired in a funky form, and are in dire need of quick redemption if they are to salvage anything from the 2016 season, let alone trying to make a run for the playoffs. Making matters worse, both teams will most likely be breaking into new starting quarterbacks, and that’s nothing to be happy about, based on the past history of the two projected QBs for this Sunday match-up. Who will be taking the much-needed positive step when these two teams meet at the MetLife Stadium this Sunday? Read on below for our all-inclusive online NFL betting preview of this showdown.

Why Bet on the Ravens?

The Ravens have lost their last three straight games since starting the season on a three-game winning streak. And in all the losses, it has been nearly the same story, with Baltimore playing poorly down the stretch of games and failing to muster enough offense. This was clearly evident last week when the Ravens took an early lead against the Giants, only to allow New York back into the game, and eventually suffer a could-be- avoided defeat. The injury of starting QB Joe Flacco didn’t help Baltimore’s course, either. With Flacco considered as a doubt for Sunday’s trip to East Rutherford, the Ravens will most likely be relying on backup Ryan Mallet as starting quarterback. On one hand, Ryan has been a considerably better starter compared to his opposite starter, Geno Smith, so that should bode well for Baltimore. On the other hand, Mallet is never a trusty starter—he completed 58 of 97 pass attempts (59.8 percent) with two touchdowns and two interceptions when filling out for Flacco in two games last season—so you should probably not expect too much from him.

Why Bet on the Jets?

So, the Jets failed to measure up to the Cardinals on Monday Night, suffering their fifth loss in six games this season, and Todd Bowles decided that he will be going with Geno Smith instead of Ryan Fitzpatrick for Sunday’s game against Baltimore. Having established a reputation as a turnover machine with 43 turnovers in his 32 games, we don’t need to tell you that having Smith as a starter is a big risk that may condemn the Jets to more losses and poor production in the offense. On the flip side, Smith was a talented guy coming out of college—no wonder he was drafted in the second round—so he may be due for a good performance after getting benched for so long and learning from his mistakes. More than that, the Jets’ defense has been able to hold its own well-enough despite the losses, meaning Smith and his offense won’t be doing it alone this Sunday.

My Expert Predictions

With so much unknowns as we head into this game, it would be a lie if I locked on one team here as my pick for the win or points. As things stand, my best advice would be to fish for the value in the total’s side, which looks really ripe to deliver an UNDER. Even if Smith plays well, which I highly doubt, the Jets have too many problems in the offense for them to explode for big points. I mean, this is an NY team that ranks dead-last in the NFL in scoring (15.8 points per game) and No. 2 in turnovers (15), so it stands to reason to expect struggles from them. And don’t cheat yourself into thinking that the Jets run offense will come through here; the Ravens have the top run defense in the league, giving up a paltry 69.7 yards per game. On the opposite side, Mallet (or Flacco) figures to run into just as much trouble as Smith, considering NY’s defense is good enough to frustrate whoever starts at QB for Baltimore. The same goes for Terrance West and his fellow Baltimore backs, who will be facing a New York run defense that ranks sixth in the NFL, giving up just 85.5 yards per game. Add up all that, you get a game that looks almost certain to be a slugfest, making an UNDER the smart pick here. Predicted NFL Score: Jets 19, Ravens 14 Writer’s NFL Pick: UNDER 40.5
