Is Lamar Jackson ready for a return to MVP form with Baltimore Ravens? According to his former backup quarterback (and current NFL analyst), Robert Griffin III, having Todd Monken at offensive coordinator and the likes of Odell Beckham Jr at wide receiver, Jackson has the tools around him to take his team back to the top of the AFC North – even with Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals currently ruling the division. The biggest question for Jackson will be health, as he has missed 11 games over the last two seasons – all at the end of both seasons. Last year, that included a Week 18 loss to Cincinnati that gave the Bengals the division title and a wild-card round loss to those same Bengals a week later. Since then, Jackson has requested a trade and then mended fences with the team to sign the fourth-richest contract in NFL history in terms of guaranteed money, so we will see if he can make it through 18 weeks this time around and remain healthy for a postseason run. Baltimore Ravens NFL Top Betting Games during the 2023 Season
Week 1: vs Houston Texans (-9.5)
The Houston Texans have invested a bit in their offensive line, but they are still relying on growth from a disappointing rookie and improvement from the middle of that unit without adding talent in those areas. Their defense, to put it kindly, is young. They will be throwing a rookie quarterback out there behind that line in C.J. Stroud, who took Ohio State to the CFP semifinals and came within a missed field goal of knocking off the Georgia Bulldogs and getting their own date with TCU in what would likely have been a national championship romp of their own.
Baltimore is a team that plays well angry – starting with its quarterback. Lamar Jackson felt underestimated and disrespected by his team’s front office, which is why he asked to be dealt away. He ended up getting the extension that he wanted, but he has to feel, in his own mind, that he has plenty of questions to answer. Even if this is really OBJ’s last season, as some have indicated, he should have plenty of speed in the tank and plenty of motivation to burn opposing defenses. All of this spells trouble for a young Texans team entering 2023 with its third head coach in three seasons – and still without much solid talent on either side of the ball except for Stroud. Week 4: at Cleveland Browns (+1)
The Baltimore Ravens lost at Cleveland last year, 13-3, but the Ravens had Tyler Huntley running the offense in Jackson’s absence. The Baltimore defense clamped down on Deshaun Watson and the Browns’ running game, but their own offense simply could not get traction. We’ll know more about Watson after this weekend as he is slated to start the Browns’ Week 1 preseason game (he didn’t appear in the Hall of Fame Game). However, there is no excitement bubbling into the media from the Cleveland camp.
The Ravens should be looking to exact some revenge from that loss and from the other two AFC North losses that they suffered in Weeks 17 and 18. Frankly, the Browns look more fragile than the other teams in the AFC North because of the potential chemistry problems in their locker room. I don’t see this game favoring Cleveland at home under these conditions. Ravens to cover.
Week 6: at Tennessee Titans (in London) (-6)
Traveling to London involves all kinds of distractions – adjusting to the significant time zone difference (and dealing with jet lag), dealing with changes in practice and training routines, and handling the distractions that come along with international travel to a neutral site. We see these distractions hamper college football teams heading to bowl games each December and January, and we see them (although to a lesser degree) in NFL games in London.
The Titans have Derrick Henry back, and the new offense seems better suited to the needs of Ryan Tannehill. How healthy (and dominant) is Henry? Can Tannehill do a more effective job leading the offense? These aren’t questions that we know yet. However, we do know that the Titans have a stout defense and a grinding approach that makes them hard to beat. This line seems high in a neutral-site game, so I’ll take Tennessee to cover.
