Carolina at New England NFL Week 4 Odds, Expert Preview & Pick

Written by on September 28, 2017

The Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots meet for the first time in the regular season since 2013, when the Panthers won down in Charlotte by a 24-20 score. The teams enter this week looking for improvement. While the Patriots did win last week, they needed a late drive to score a touchdown to escape with a 36-33 victory. Carolina comes in smarting from the 34-13 shellacking that the New Orleans Saints dealt them on their own field. As you consider your NFL odds pick for this matchup, take a look at our perspective on the two teams for NFL Week 4.

Why should you bet on the Panthers?

What’s going on with the Carolina offense? The answers begin with Cam Newton, who went 17 for 26 against the Saints, accounting for just 167 yards — and three interceptions. The Saints, to be kind, do not have one of the better passing defenses in the NFL, so this struggle is puzzling. His QBR for the season is just 69.7 through three games, good for #29 in the NFL right now. The Panthers have been able to ride their defense to wins against San Francisco and Buffalo, but as they take on teams with better offenses, they will need more from Newton and the rest of the offense in order to contend. If you like the Panthers, then you’re touting the fact that they lead the league in fewest yards permitted per game (251.7) and are second in points permitted per game (13.3). They have, at least to this point, solved some of the defensive issues that plagued them in 2016. However, the 34 points that they gave up against the Saints are concerning. If they can’t rein in Tom Brady any more effectively than they reined in Drew Brees, this could be another long day for that Panther defense.

Why should you put your money on the Patriots?

Despite the fact that he is 40 years old this season, Tom Brady showed last week that he still has what it takes to lead his team down the field in a flash when they need it. The Houston Texans went up, 33-29, just a few ticks ahead of the two-minute warning, and so Brady and the Patriot offense went to work, driving down the field to get a score when Brady found Brandin Cooks in the end zone, leading the 52nd fourth-quarter comeback in his storied career. That made five touchdown passes for Brady in the game, and he racked up 378 yards through the air, all told. If he keeps playing at this clip, he will throw 43 touchdowns (and no interceptions), and pick up 5,824 yards on the season. Are the Patriots a safe bet against the Panthers? The questions for New England come on defense. They allowed 417 yards against Houston — including 292 in the passing game from rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson. New England did snag a couple of key interceptions, but for the most part, the Texans were able to move the ball at will. Fortunately for the Patriots, the Panthers show the least offensive life of any of the teams that New England has played so far. Given that the Patriots are dead last in the NFL in yards permitted per game (461), points permitted per game (31.7) and passing yards permitted per game (330.7), they need to make some improvements in this area if they want to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive.

Expert NFL Week 4 Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’m a big fan of Cam Newton and hope that he puts things back together so that he gets the same sort of results that he had in 2015. However, I don’t see him doing that against the Patriots this week. I predict a final score of New England 38, Carolina 23.
