SNF Chargers at Chiefs Odds | The Los Angeles Chargers (8-4) head east to Arrowhead Stadium for another crack at their AFC West nemeses – the 11-1 Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs haven’t looked dominant in weeks but keep grinding out win after win.
Since October 20, the Chiefs haven’t won any game by more than seven points; their last three wins have come by a combined seven points.
Their 30-21 loss in Buffalo was actually more of a thumping than the final score indicated, and their last five wins have come against the likes of a Las Vegas team with backup quarterbacks (twice), a Denver team with a rookie quarterback, and a Carolina team that is now 3-9.
The Chargers have won five of their last six, with the only setback coming at home against the Ravens on November 25. In that game, the Chargers controlled the first half, only to collapse in the second half on both sides of the ball.
If the Chiefs win, they clinch their ninth straight AFC West crown, guaranteeing themselves at least one home playoff game.
They will have a fight on their hands with Buffalo and Pittsburgh for the top AFC seed, which comes with a first-round bye and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl.
The Chargers are in the middle of a struggle with Baltimore (8-5) and Denver (8-5) for wild-card positioning. The Chiefs have beaten the Chargers six straight times including a 17-10 win in Los Angeles on September 29.
Five of those six wins have come by one possession, and several of those wins feature crucial late plays that have gone the Chiefs’ way.

The Chargers’ offensive line is suddenly a cause for concern. The Ravens were able to clog up the Chargers’ running game and chase Justin Herbert all over the field in the second half of their Week 12 game, and last week, an Atlanta team that had posted just 10 sacks for the whole season were able to take Herbert – a mobile quarterback – down five times. That makes nine sacks over the last two games. Chris Jones is just one ferocious pass rusher on a Chiefs defense that makes life hard for opposing quarterbacks, so expect Kansas City to pin their ears back on defense and get after Herbert as well. The Chargers also need to get more out of tailbacks Gus Edwards and Kimani Vidal with J.K. Dobbins on the IR list with an MCL sprain.
An impressive player for the Chargers last week was cornerback Tarheeb Still, who picked off Kirk Cousins twice, including a 61-yard pick-six. The last time a Chargers rookie had more than one pick in the same game was way back in 1985 when cornerback John Hendy pulled off the feat. The L.A. defense is tops in the league in scoring permitted (15.7 points per game). On offense, Ladd McConkey was also impressive, catching nine balls for 117 yards. In a season when the Chargers had to deal with the loss of Mike Williams and Keenan Allen to free agency, there were always going to be opportunities to produce, and McConkey is taking advantage. Herbert only had 147 passing yards on the day, so McConkey had more than the lion’s share of the production.

The Chiefs have struggled mightily to finish wins against…the Carolina Panthers and the Las Vegas Raiders the last two weeks. They were up two touchdowns on Carolina in the first half before taking their foot off the gas, and they led the Raiders by 13 late in the third quarter before things got interesting. If the Chiefs have to wait until it’s an emergency to up their game, they will run into someone in the playoffs that will end their run. Left tackle is still a problem. Wanya Morris got the start against the Raiders, but let so much get by him that he was sent to the bench. Rookie Kingsley Suamataia was the starter in Week 1 but couldn’t keep the job. The team pulled free agent D.J. Humphries off the couch to start against the Chargers, and we’ll see how this latest experiment goes.
Tailback Isiah Pacheco has returned to the Kansas City offense, and with him comes his angry power running. He only had seven carries, but he picked up 44 yards on the day. The Chiefs offense as a unit is just 11th in the league (24.1 points per game), a disappointing total given the potential that Patrick Mahomes brings to the game. The loss of wide receiver Rashee Rice for the season means that Xavier Worthy is the only real speed target in the receiving group. With the slowing productivity of Tyler Kelce at tight end, Noah Gray and Justin Watson have upped their numbers at that position, but the Chiefs’ offense is not the scoring machine it has been in years past.
^SNF Chargers at Chiefs Odds, Final Score and Prediction in Week 14
The Chiefs have a couple of days’ rest advantage in this game, as they played on Friday, November 29. They have a 12-game winning streak at home when they are playing a team with less rest. The Chargers also have a nine-game losing streak straight up when they enter as underdogs against conference foes. December has particularly been hard on the Chargers in divisional play, as they have a five-game losing streak against the spread against AFC West teams. In general, the favorite has covered in 10 of the Chargers’ last 12 games. At Arrowhead in December, they have lost the first half in six straight games.
Expect this game to be fairly low-scoring. The temperature will be in the 40s, but it should be dry and cool. The Chargers aren’t exactly a cold-weather team, but they do play a tough, grinding defense, allowing just 15.7 points per game. It might seem ironic to expect a defensive struggle between these two teams, but if you look at the point total, you can see the books also have a sense of how this game will go. If the Chargers had better O-line play, I would put money on them to get the upset. I’m not betting against the line here, because I think it will come down to the last possession – which could lead to a result on either side pretty easily.
I’m definitely taking the under, and I’m predicting a final score of Kansas City 20, Los Angeles 17.
