The Los Angeles Chargers and the Oakland Raiders have been members of the same division since they were founded in 1960 as part of the American Football League, and they remained divisional rivalries after the AFL and the NFL merged. The two teams have played 118 times in the regular season and the playoffs, and Oakland has won 63 times, with the Chargers winning 54 times and two games ending in ties. The Chargers have won the last four meetings, though, including a 20-6 win on November 11, 2018. Right now, both teams are in the thick of the AFC West, as Oakland has a record of 4-4, 1 ½ games behind Kansas City, while the Chargers sit a half-game behind Oakland at 4-5. Can the Chargers pass the Raiders in the standings with a road win? Or will Oakland take an important step toward a potential playoff spot with a win? Why should you bet on the Chargers?
This would have been a hard argument to make until this past weekend, when the Chargers undressed Green Bay at home. Philip Rivers had his finest game of the 2019 campaign, going 21 for 28 for 294 yards. Melvin Gordon found the end zone twice, picking up 80 yards on 20 carries, and Mike Williams caught just three passes — but romped for 111 yards. The team as a whole picked up 442 yards of offense against a Packer defense that had held many of the league’s more highly touted units in check.
The defense was just as good, holding the venerable Green Bay offense to just 184 yards. The Chargers’ pass rush broke through the Green Bay line again and again, and even the wily Aaron Rodgers often had no time to get rid of the ball. If you look at betting trends, the Chargers have played quite well on Thursdays, covering the spread in four straight midweek games. On the road, the Chargers have covered reliably — beating the spread in nine of their last 12 games away from home.
Why should you put your money on the Raiders?
Oakland also looked solid last week, beating Detroit, 31-24, at home. Derek Carr went 20 for 31 for 289 yards and a pair of scores. Tailback Josh Jacobs rumbled for 120 yards and two scores on 28 attempts. The Raiders’ defense had a tough time, giving up 473 yards of offense, but they did get a stop when they needed it, stuffing Detroit on 4th and 1 from the 1-yard line int he waning seconds. Oakland does need to work on ball security, as they had three fumbles against the Lions — fortunately, they recovered all of them.
The Raiders have been point spread machines at home as of late, covering in six of their last seven games at the Coliseum. They have also covered in four of their last five overall. The biggest question for Oakland is the health of Josh Jacobs, who is questionable for Week 10. You’ll want to check the latest news on his health before you lock in any wagers on the game.
Final Score Prediction
As you can see from the tight point spread, this is a difficult game to call. The Chargers had dropped three in a row before winning in Chicago two weeks ago (thanks to a missed field goal by the Bears) and then routing the Packers. The Raiders lost a tough game in Houston two weeks ago, on a play when Texans Deshaun Watson simply delivered the game for his team.
I’m going with the home team, simply because the Raiders tend to deliver in Oakland, especially in prime time. I predict a final score of Oakland 30, San Diego 23.
