Cincinnati at Cleveland NFL Week 4 Betting Preview & Pick

Written by on September 29, 2017

Something will have to give on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland, as a pair of winless teams take the field at FirstEnergy Stadium. Cleveland hung close to Pittsburgh and Indianapolis in two of their losses, while Cincinnati roared out to a 21-7 lead at Green Bay but ended up losing the lead and then the game, in overtime. The Bengals have struggled to move the ball, even firing their offensive coordinator after the second game of the season, while the Browns have had more issues on defense and special teams to this point. Which team will get their first win of the season in NFL Week 4? Check out our NFL odds & perspective on this AFC North tilt.

Why should you bet on the Bengals?

After putting up nine points combined in their losses to Baltimore and Houston, they put up 24 points in that overtime los in Green Bay. When Cincinnati drove down the field and scored to open the game against the Packers, that marked the first time in their last 26 series that they had made it into the end zone. A.J. Green was able to get open for a change, hauling in 10 receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. It is worth pointing out, of course, that 21 of those 24 points came before halftime, so the adjustments that Green Bay made on defense were enough to shut the Bengals’ offense down again. On defense, the Bengals took advantage of some Green Bay  miscues in the first half but were unable to get stops after the intermission, as Aaron Rodgers led drive after drive to get the Packers back into the game. That defense gave up 20 points to the Ravens — a team that would only be able to put up seven last week in a rout by the Jacksonville Jaguars. So the defense still has plenty of questions to answer — as you would expect in the case of a winless team after three weeks.

Why should you put your money on the Browns?

The Cleveland Browns are doing a lot of things well, but their inability to get out of their own way has played a big role in their current record. Last week, they put up 28 points on the Indianapolis Colts, but DeShone Kizer threw three interceptions and lost a fumble, which played a big role in the Colts’ ability to score 31 and take the win. Kizer has a 53.2 combined passer rating for the season, which is dead last among the NFL’s 32 starting quarterbacks. His line hasn’t helped him much, as he has gone down to sacks 10 times. Also, the fact that the Browns have had at least 10 penalties in each of their last two games has not helped. Are the Browns a safe bet in Week 4? The defense is also young — but opportunistic. They held Pittsburgh to two offensive touchdowns in Week One (the third Steeler touchdown came courtesy of a blocked punt), and they have the speed to keep up with anyone. They just need to learn the ins and outs of playing against NFL offenses — and how to avoid the backbreaking penalties that extend opponent drives and keep them out on the field instead of giving the ball back to the offense. Of course, they’ve had to come out and defend some short fields after turnovers by the offense as well. If you like Cleveland here, you see them putting enough together to knock off another hapless team.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’ve been a big Cleveland fan from the outset this year. Their youth and talent should be enough for this team to start winning, once they get through some of these growing pains. I see Cincinnati as a team that is still heading downward, that first half against Green Bay notwithstanding. I predict a 20-16 win in NFL Week 4 for Cleveland on Sunday.
