Cleveland at Chicago NFL Preseason Week 4 Betting Lines & Pick

Written by on August 30, 2017

Both the Cleveland Browns (3-0) and the Chicago Bears (2-1) have picked up some big wins in the NFL preseason and wrap up their warmup games on Thursday night, as they meet at Soldier Field. The Browns have named DeShone Kizer, the talented rookie from Notre Dame, their starting quarterback — so expect to see some of the Browns’ backups on the field against Chicago. The Browns do, however, come into this game riding high on a wave of optimism. Can the Bears bring the Browns back down to earth? The Bears head into this matchup as the favorites in the betting odds.

Why should you bet on the Browns?

You might think that going 6 for 18 for 93 yards and a pick wouldn’t be good enough to land you a starting quarterback position in the National Football League. However, the Cleveland Browns aren’t just any team — and DeShone Kizer’s low completion percentage had a lot more to do with passes clanging off the hands of receivers than it did with a lack of accuracy. The Browns enter the season young and optimistic. If Cleveland’s offensive line can continue its early trend of pass protection and opening holes for runners, the Browns could definitely surprise some teams this year. On defense, the Browns have looked particularly solid in the preseason. While their offense has shown growing pains — and with the other quarterback options ranging from Brock Osweiler and Kevin Hogan to Cody Kessler, that’s not particularly surprising — the defense has managed to keep opposing offenses out of the end zone, no matter which unit is on the field. While Chicago’s rookie quarterback, Mitch Trubisky, has played well in these early weeks, the Browns have the defensive system in place to keep the Bears out of the end zone, so long as they can execute consistently.

Why should you put your money on the Bears?

Expect to see Mitch Trubisky taking the lion’s share of the offensive snaps for Chicago on Thursday night. His numbers so far have been solid; in Week Three, he went 10 for 15 for 128 yards and a score — a 45-yard bomb, to be exact, a strike to Tanner Gentry on the second Bear drive of the game. In the first two preseason games, Trubisky completed a combined 73 percent of his passes, rolling up 226 yards and firing a pair of touchdown passes. So if the Browns don’t bring a pass rush or do much in the way of pass coverage, the Bears could make this a long night for them. Are the Bears a safe bet in Week 4 of the NFL Preseason? Like the Browns, the Bears are also playing a stingier form of defense than we have seen out of them in the past few seasons. They held a Tennessee team led by Marcus Mariota and featuring DeMarco Murray in the backfield to just a single touchdown a week ago. Playing with that same physicality against the up-and- coming Browns should lead Chicago to another strong defensive effort. With the likes of Osweiler and Kessler dropping back to pass, the Bears should pin their ears back with an all-out rush and wait for poor decisions by those quarterbacks to bring interceptions their way.

Expert NFL Preseason Pick and Final Score Prediction

Cleveland has had a great preseason so far, particularly in the area of defensive effort, and I see them holding Chicago in check much like they have their first three opponents. Chicago will also make life hard for the Browns to move the ball. In fact, I don’t expect either team to find the end zone as the reserves will struggle against one another’s defensive systems. I predict a final score of Chicago 12, Cleveland 9 as both teams rest their starters to prepare for Week 1.
