2023 NFL Division Odds to Win AFC South

NFL Betting Lines: There was a time when the Houston Texans were the class of the AFC South, with Bill O’Brien at head coach. Deshaun Watson emerged as one of the next great elite quarterbacks, but then things all fell apart. The front office encountered turmoil and accusations of racism in their hiring practices. Watson demanded a trade and then got hit by almost a couple dozen allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct from massage therapists. The team basically traded away most of its top-tier talent and enters 2023 with its third head coach in three seasons. The incoming rookies look promising, led by quarterback C.J. Stroud, but without veteran talent, Texans fans should expect another long year. It’s not surprising that the Texans have the longest sports betting odds to win this division. Let’s check out the latest NFL odds along with some thoughts about each team.

The Houston Texans will give Stroud the keys to the offense to start the season. The offensive line in front of him is a mixed bag, which means he will spend a lot of his rookie season running for his life. Defensive end Will Anderson has been causing mayhem in training camp – which makes sense, given the iffy nature of that O-line. Juice Scruggs is an exception up front, as the rookie center is more than holding his own after having to take the place of Scott Quessenberry, who blew an ACL and an MCL a couple weeks back. Wide receiver Tank Dell put up some big numbers in the preseason opener, a win over the Patriots. Dell comes out of the University of Houston, where he ran the pro-style Air Raid offense, but he can also block down the field, so he bears some watching.

The biggest question for the Tennessee Titans is what Derrick Henry has left in the tank. The grinding tailback was putting defenders on their backs up and down the field for several seasons until a foot injury sidelined him in 2021. He returned for a playoff loss to Cincinnati but didn’t look 100%. In 2022, he was second in the NFL in carries and third in rushing yards, and he set career marks in targets, catches and yards per route run. Overall, the offense was weaker, but now that the Titans have added DeAndre Hopkins at wide receiver, the passing game should be able to hold its own this year.

The Indianapolis Colts have made Anthony Richardson their starting quarterback after watching him play just a quarter of preseason football. Gardner Minshew is the backup now, but don’t be surprised if he has to come in and help out here and there, like Ryan Fitzpatrick did during Tua Tagovailoa’s rookie campaign. The Colts need to mend fences with star tailback Jonathan Taylor if the offense is going to have any chance of early success, though. Taylor has requested a trade, but the front office has said he isn’t going anywhere – and they’re also indicating that he belongs on the PUP (player unable to perform) list because of an outside injury, which would allow them to avoid paying him. We’ll see where that drama goes.

The Jacksonville Jaguars, all of a sudden, look like one of the most functional teams in this division. Doug Pederson has settled the team down as head coach and has Trevor Lawrence playing for success. The front office has built a solid offensive line, which makes life a lot simpler moving the ball. With the talent at tailback and wide receiver, the Jaguars are a smart pick to win this division – but I’m not sure they offer enough value, because they’re just a couple of key injuries away from sliding behind Tennessee.
