Detroit has seen Jared Goff rebound from a lengthy funk to play quarterback at an elite level. The O-line ranks in the league’s top five, and Amon-Ra St. Brown has emerged as a top wide receiver. The team traded away tailback D’Andre Swift but added Jahmyr Gibbs to fill his spot. Jameson Williams has a six-game suspension to serve, but he will add to the offense once he gets back. Tight end Sam LaPorta also came in the draft and should contribute immediately. The defense got upgrades in defensive backs C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Cam Sutton through free agency and linebacker Jack Campbell in the draft.
Minnesota inked tight end Josh Oliver to a free-agency deal. Oliver can be prone to injury but should be able to deliver some big plays as well. They also added Marcus Davenport at edge rusher through free agency. They drafted Mekhi Blackmon to come in and play lockdown corner after losing four defensive backs to free agency. Blackmon only missed two tackles last year and only permitted catches on 47.6% of passes targeting the man he was covering in 2022.
Green Bay moves on to the Jordan Love era having stood mostly pat through free agency. The team also lost Allen Lazard, who followed Aaron Rodgers to the Jets. Lukas Van Ness was the first Green Bay pick in the spring draft, and he shows a lot of promise for a defensive lineman prospect. The Packers’ defense is a unit that has received a lot of money without producing a lot of results. Right now, the Packers look like a rebuilding project.
Chicago added some solid names in free agency but still has the most cap room of any of the 32 teams. They added T.J. Edwards and Tremaine Edmunds to give the team a pair of elite linebackers. DeMarcus Walker and Andrew Billings will make the defensive line much more formidable, and the Bears strengthened their O-line by adding guard Nate Davis via free agency and drafting Darnell Wright, who only permitted eight pressures in 2022. He ranked fourth among FBS tackles with a pressure rate of just 1.7%. On the defensive line, they drafted Gervon Dexter Sr, Travis Bell, and Zacch Pickens, who had an 11.5% pass rush win rate last year. They also traded up to draft cornerback Tyrique Stevenson out of Miami, who ranked second in the FBS for cornerback press coverage grade (88.5).
