NFL Giants vs Cardinals Odds, Analysis and Prediction for Week 2

Written by on September 15, 2023

Tailback James Conner has a lot of qualities that NFL teams look for. He’s a solid leader in the locker room, and he can find his way through opposing defenses, running with both speed and power. The problem, though, is that he has never completed an entire season in his seven-year career, and he’s already on the Arizona Cardinals’ injury report after one game. On Wednesday, he was limited in practice with a calf strain, and he had a sleeve on his leg in Thursday’s practice. He is questionable for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. His backup? Keaontay Ingram, who managed minus-4 yards on five carries in the Week 1 loss to Washington. Kareem Hunt and Leonard Fournette are still available on the free agency market – but will the Cards make a move? We will see. They welcome a Giants team that was absolutely thrashed by Dallas, 40-0, at home in their opener. Things have to get better for the G-men this week, don’t they? We have your sports betting preview right here of the NFL Giants vs Cardinals.

Why should you bet on the Giants?

If you just look at Week 1, it’s hard to argue that you should put money down on the Giants. Daniel Jones went 15 of 28 for 104 yards with two interceptions, posting a quarterback rating of 32.4. He ran for 43 yards. Saquon Barkley ran for 51 yards – the vast majority coming on the first drive of the game. Darren Waller was the top pass catcher – with three catches for 36 yards. The Giants had three turnovers (adding a lost fumble to the mix), and one of the interceptions was a pick-six.

On the injury report, the Giants list 10 players as questionable – including offensive lineman Matt Peart. Waller appears on the report as probable. This is a team that was feisty on defense last year, and they did hold Dak Prescott to limited production (the Cowboys only managed two offensive touchdowns, with a defensive score, a special-teams touchdown, and four field goals making up the rest of their points). The Giants should be able to put the clamps on Joshua Dobbs and the Arizona offense, but can the Giants score?

Why should you put your money on the Cardinals?

I expected the Cardinals to get dismantled in Washington in Week 1. Instead, they took the game to the Commanders, going into the fourth quarter with a 16-10 lead. The Commanders had to scramble for ten fourth-quarter points to get the victory. The Cardinals won on the road with Joshua Dobbs at quarterback – a player they had just traded for a few days before. They didn’t have their top defensive ends from last year, and their two best wideouts from 2022 were also gone. They had a new head coach, a new OC and a new DC.

Even so, the Cardinals kept the game close because of a fiery defense. They sacked Washington QB Sam Howell six times. Linebacker Dennis Gardeck produced 32 sack yards and leads the NFL. Now they face Daniel Jones, who got sacked seven times in the Giants’ Week 1 loss to Dallas. The New York O-line permitted a 65% pressure rate, the worst number in the league. Jones threw two interceptions in the loss. The performance of the offensive line could become a chronic problem for the Giants this year. It was in 2022 as the unit allowed pressure in no more than 2 ½ seconds at the fifth-worst rate. Evan Neal allowed seven sacks as a rookie in 2022, tied for seventh-most by a tackle. In Week 1, of the 60 tackles who played in the league, he ranked 59th in pass block win rate.

Final Score and Prediction

This line opened at Arizona +5.5 and has shifted rapidly as action has fallen the other way. If the line gets to +3, I would think about going with the Giants, but I’m not sure New York can win this by more than a field goal. The offensive-line problems were an issue last year, and the Cardinals showed they can disrupt the passing game. Saquon Barkley is a transcendent talent carrying the ball, but he didn’t do much at all after the team’s successful opening drive against Dallas – which ended in that blocked field goal. I predict a final score of New York 20, Arizona 17.
