The Kansas City Chiefs enter 2021 looking to go where only three other teams have gone before: head to three consecutive Super Bowls. The Miami Dolphins made it to Super Bowls VI, VII and VIII (although they only won one). The Buffalo Bills actually made it to four Super Bowls (XXV through XXVIII) — and lost all four of them. The New England Patriots made it to Super Bowls LI, LII and LIII, winning two out of three.
As we consider the Chiefs’ NFL betting odds of winning their division, the AFC and Super Bowl LVI, let’s break down the competition.
NFL News: Kansas City Chiefs Season Betting Analysis
Odds to Win the AFC West: -275
Odds to Win the AFC Championship: +260
Odds to Win Super Bowl LVI: +450
Should the Chiefs be such heavy favorites to win the AFC West?
Absolutely. Yes, the Chiefs saw a couple of key free agents leave the defense, but they revamped their offensive line — where two key injuries allowed Tampa Bay to harass Patrick Mahomes all night long in Super Bowl LV — and Mahomes should be ready to come back hungrier this season.
The real reason why the Chiefs’ divisional odds are this low has to do with their competition. The Chargers have the best chance of unseating the Chiefs, and they look to Derwin James at safety to anchor their defense. He has had injury problems the last two seasons, and the Chargers also have Justin Herbert returning at quarterback. The team can put up points, but getting stops on defense would make them more formidable.
The Raiders got a solid season out of Derek Carr last year, and tailback Josh Jacobs is healthy. The wide receivers have talent, starting with Henry Ruggs III and Hunter Renfrow and extending to possible reclamation project John Brown. Bryan Edwards has gotten comparisons to Terrell Owens and Davante Adams in camp. Can the Raiders actually score in bunches this year?
And then there are the Denver Broncos. Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater look potentially solid at quarterback, but the Broncos have too many needs to push the Chiefs.
Should the Chiefs be the favorites to win the AFC?
Given the heavy action coming in on them, the answer is yes. Can they hold off the likes of Cleveland, Buffalo and Baltimore to even get to the Super Bowl, though? The Bills and Browns have done more to better their rosters than have the Chiefs, and the Ravens have the talent to win the AFC North and make a deep run themselves. You can get a lot more value — and have a lot better chances — going with one of these other three teams.
Should the Chiefs be the favorites to win the Super Bowl?
If they get back to the title game? Absolutely. The Chiefs will be ready for the Tampa Bay pass rush, and unless Aaron Rodgers gets the Green Bay Packers to the title game, there is not another team in the NFC that can hang with the Kansas City offense. The question of whether they can get there or not, of course, is the real one.
