Kansas City at Seattle NFL Preseason Lines & Betting Prediction

Written by on August 24, 2017

The Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs both looked impressive in Week 2 of the 2017 NFL preseason. The Seahawks knocked off a solid Minnesota team on Friday night, 20-13, while the Kansas City Chiefs hung 30 in the Cincinnati Bengals in their matchup. Can Alex Smith shake his reputation as a plodding game manager for the Chiefs offense and get some energy going down the field? Or will the Legion of Boom claim another victim as the Seahawks roll to a 2-1 NFL preseason record? As of now, the Seahawks are the betting favorites in the NFL odds against the Chiefs.

Why should you bet on the Chiefs?

Kansas City rolled up 410 yards and 22 first downs on Cincinnati a week ago, holding onto the ball for 34:17 of the game clock. Three different quarterbacks threw touchdown passes on the night, and the Chiefs did not commit any turnovers. This is Andy Reid football to a T — the challenge will be replicating that same outcome against a much more dynamic defense. The Bengals don’t offer much in the way of resistance against opposing offenses, so systems like the Chiefs’ can develop a consistent rhythm. The individual numbers also looked solid for Kansas City. Smith went 8 for 9 for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Patrick Mahomes II went 10 for 14 for 88 yards and a pair of scores, continuing to impress in his rookie preseason. The running game was just as solid, picking up 223 yards, led by 113 from Charcandrick West — on just seven carries. If the Chiefs can find a way to move the ball against Seattle, it will be difficult for the Seahawks to build their own momentum.

Why should you put your money on the Seahawks?

Remember — Pete Carroll leads all active NFL coaches in preseason winning percentage — a sign that these games’ records matter to him more than they probably do to many other head coaches. The Seahawks also get to play this game at home, which is a major predictor for their victories, as they feed off the energy from that raucous 12th Man — the crowd. Are the Seahawks a safe bet in Week 3 of the NFL Preseason? On the statistical side, Russell Wilson went 13 for 18 for 206 yards and two scores. Backup Trevone Boykin went 5 for 8 for 55 yards, and Austin Davis went 2 for 5 for 21 yards. Alex Collins was impressive carrying the ball, taking 10 carries 58 yards. Mike Davis (6 attempts, 37 yards) and Chris Carson (6 attempts, 27 yards) also had decent nights. Then there’s the Seattle defense, which limited Minnesota’s efficiency moving the ball. You could argue that the Legion of Boom is getting older — but they didn’t play that way last week.

Expert NFL Preseason Pick and Final Score Prediction

It’s hard to argue with the regular-season success that Kansas City has had over the past few seasons under Andy Reid. However, when they run into a higher-level defense that forces Alex Smith away from his check-down passing game, things tend not to go well for the Chiefs as they fall into a real rut and don’t seem to have any solutions down the field. Mahomes could represent a solution to that, but I’m not sure that Reid is willing to give him the keys to the team just yet. I see this turning into a real defensive struggle early, but then I see Seattle turning the tide and coming away with a 20-13 win. I like what Kansas City has going, but I also see that they tend to run into real trouble when they hit a defense that is quick enough to cover what’s underneath and force Smith to look down the field.
