NFL Game Odds: Lions at Texans | Is NFL officiating becoming a sports betting problem?

The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in overtime even though their scoring play involved a clear false start on the right side of their offensive line.

The Minnesota Vikings were denied a chance at a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter against the L.A. Rams when quarterback Sam Darnold was yanked down by his face mask in his own end zone.

Instead of marching off a 15-yard personal foul, the officials simply called a safety, effectively ending the game.

On Thursday, the Cincinnati Bengals’ potential game-winning two-point conversion failed, as their tight end was tackled and the quarterback endured a hit to the head post-pass.

The NFL’s disregard for both errors and subsequent criticisms highlights a troubling indifference toward issues impacting numerous close games, especially as we approach Week 10 of the season.

As we near this Sunday’s games, don’t miss our thoughts about the prime-time clash between the Detroit Lions and the Houston Texans.

Detroit Lions -189

The Lions keep rolling with all kinds of momentum after they beat the Green Bay Packers, 24-14, at Lambeau Field to move 1 ½ games ahead of the Packers and to stay a game ahead of the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North.

This was Detroit’s first outdoor game of the 2024 season, and it was cold and rainy, but the Lions showed they could control matters no matter what the conditions. Kerby Joseph took a pick-six to the house, and Detroit turned two fourth downs into scores.

The Lions last posted a 7-1 record in 1956. They enjoyed a three-game win streak at Lambeau from 1986-1991. Jared Goff has a record 82.8% completion rate recently.

The defense also stiffened in the red zone as Green Bay made it inside the red zone four times but only came out with a touchdown and two field goals, and the Packers had three other possessions that went inside the Detroit 35 that ended with a total of zero points.

Houston, with a 6-3 record, faces a seven-game losing streak against winning NFC teams. This season, they are 0-2 against NFC North teams, losing to Minnesota and Green Bay on the road.

Detroit rolls in on a six-game winning streak after that surprising home loss to Tampa Bay in week 2, and they have covered in their last seven games against AFC teams in which they were favorites.

They’ve also been road warriors, winning the first half in nine straight games away from Ford Field in which they were favored to win. They have gotten off to fast starts in those situations, finding the end zone first in 11 of their last 12 games when favored to win.

Houston Texans +153

The Texans will enter this game after having had 10 days to think about their last outing – a disappointing 21-13 loss to the Jets in New York last Thursday. The Jets entered that game with just a 2-6 record, but their defense shut down what has been an electric offense for much of the season.

Garrett Wilson made two spectacular one-handed touchdown catches, aided by Aaron Rodgers’ three scoring passes for the Jets. C.J. Stroud struggled with 11 of 30 passes for 191 yards, while injuries to Diggs and Collins left Tank Dell as the sole playmaker. Fairbairn missed two field goals.

Joe Mixon ran for the only Houston touchdown, a three-yard effort that finished a 98-yard drive. The combination of missed opportunities and coverage miscues kept the Houston defense from smothering a Jets offense that has struggled just about every week, and the O-line’s failures to protect Stroud forced him into hurried throws.

Houston is undefeated at NrG Stadium this season with a 4-0 record, but each win has been by six points or fewer. Their highest scoring home game was a 24-20 victory over Jacksonville.

They’ve also edged out Buffalo and Indianapolis with 23-20 wins. Supporters believe their defense can contain the Lions and pressure Jared Goff.

NFL Game Odds: Lions at Texans Final Score and Prediction in Week 10

Detroit Injuries

The Lions’ injury report lists 10 players ahead of Sunday’s game. New defensive lineman Za’Darius Smith hasn’t practiced, raising uncertainty about his availability. His presence could greatly enhance the defense. Defensive lineman Brodric Martin and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley fully participated in practice, along with several others. However, linebackers Malcolm Rodriguez and Jalen Reeves-Maybin did not practice, and offensive tackle Taylor Decker remains limited due to his shoulder injury.

Houston Injuries

The Texans’ injury report lists 14 players, with key absentees including offensive guard Kenyon Green (shoulder), linebacker Jake Hansen (ankle), and tailback Dameon Pierce (groin). Defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi (groin) also missed practice. Limited participants included Derek Barnett (calf) and Jerry Hughes (hip). Full practice was attended by Jarrett Patterson (concussion) and Shaq Mason (hip).

If you like the Lions, you see their overwhelming offense carrying the day. They average 32.3 points per game, tops in the NFL. They also lead the league in average kickoff return (34.9 yards per game). Interestingly, the Texans are second in total defense (281.7 yards permitted per game). The Lions are 4-0 on the road – but will there be a letdown after that emotional win at Lambeau Field? I don’t think so – head coach Dan Campbell says this team is built to win, and they are looking to go all the way.

I predict a final score of Detroit 27, Houston 20.
