NFL Miami Dolphins Odds: Offense In-Depth Betting Analysis

The Minnesota Vikings created a stir in the NFL’s running back market when they released Dalvin Cook. Cook has built a reputation as one of the best dual-threat tailbacks in the league, strong both in carrying the ball and in catching passes out of the backfield. Cook has run for more than 1,100 yards in four straight seasons, and he also caught 39 balls for 295 yards last year, scoring 10 touchdowns in total. The Dolphins traded Chase Edmonds to Denver, so they have room for Cook – who makes a much more established option. Will they do it? Read on to learn more of our thoughts about the 2023 Miami offense as you consider your NFL betting for the upcoming NFL season.

NFL Betting News: In-Depth Analysis – the 2023 Miami Dolphins Offense

The Dolphins made it to the playoffs in Mike McDaniel’s first year as head coach, finishing 9-8 to snag a wild card. This time around, the league has dealt the Dolphins the fifth-toughest slate in terms of strength of schedule. McDaniel came to town to give the offense a jolt, and the Dolphins showed a commitment to that philosophy by trading for wide receiver Tyreek Hill. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, the Dolphins’ offense put up some big numbers. Tagovailoa was tops in the NFL in air yards per completion, and he came in tenth in on-target percentage.

One question, of course, is how Tagovailoa will respond when he returns to live play. He had two brutal concussions last season, and he ended up missing all or part of five games as a result. Even by the wild-cadr game, he lacked the clarity to come back and lead his offense. One of the first questions that the preseason and early weeks will likely answer for us is whether Tagovailoa can come back and play quarterback at a highly productive level after having to miss so much time. He did take jiu-jitsu to help him prepare for hits, and Tagovailoa spent a lot of time in the weight room.

Even with Tagovailoa missing so much time, Hill had six games with 143 or more receiving yards and finished second in the league in total receptions and receiving yards. Despite the fact that the Dolphins had the league’s fifth-worst starting field position, they had the sixth-most yards, the 11th-most points, and the 13th best scoring percentage.

Tailback Raheem Mostert had a bit of a throwback season last year, after a couple of seasons when he struggled to produce. He finished in T17 for yards before contact per carry and T9 for yards after contact per attempt. McDaniel observed after the season that the Dolphins should have run the ball more down the stretch instead of relying on the passing game, even in Tagovailoa’s absence.

To adjust, the O-line has to be better, both in terms of keeping Tagovailoa from getting nailed by opposing pass rushes, and opening holes for Mostert and the rest of the Miami running backs. The team added Devon Achane in the third round of the draft to give depth in the offensive backfield. It will help if McDaniel can commit to a more moderate pace on offense; there were times when he and Tagovailoa got too committed to big plays down the field, and the risk-reward equation eventually turned against them.

Miami has to play the AFC West and the NFC East, which means that they will face some imposing defenses. If Tagovailoa and Terron Armstead can stay on the field, then the Dolphins have a chance to return to the playoffs. If they decide to add Dalvin Cook, they become the dark horse of the AFC East, still traveling under the radar that the Jets and the Bills have generated.
