New England Patriots 2019 NFL Season Win/Loss Total Odds & Prediction

New England Patriots 2019 NFL Season Win/Loss Total Odds & Prediction

Going into 2019, the New England Patriots sit atop the win/loss totals with most sports betting books, with 11 the most popular total. This comes after an 11-5 campaign in 2018 that saw some shocking early losses, including setbacks in Detroit and Jacksonville that saw the team start 1-2 before rolling off six straight wins…before getting routed in Tennessee. Losses in Miami and Pittsburgh were the final blemishes on the Patriots’ record as they finished with home cakewalks against Buffalo and the New York Jets. Can the Patriots make it to 11 wins — or higher — in 2019? We take a look at their schedule and make suggestions for your wagering decisions.

New England Patriots 2019 NFL Season Win/Loss Total Odds & Prediction

Perhaps the biggest change in Foxborough is the departure of tight end Rob Gronkowski, who thanks to his size, strength and hands was the game’s best at that position. The defense also lost a huge contributor in Trey Flowers, who signed with Detroit, reuniting with former defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, and the Patriots’ ability to rush the passer took a hit as a result. New England has responded with three significant additions. They replaced Flowers with Michael Bennett, who enters year 11 of his NFL career by signing with his fourth team. He had nine sacks and 30 quarterback hits in 2018. He is 33, but he still has one of the best pass rush skill sets in the league. They added to their wide receiving corps by drafting N’Keal Harry. He was one of the best wideouts in the draft class, and somehow he made it all the way down to the Patriots. At 6’2” he is tall enough to go up and get those jump balls Tom Brady likes to put up in the red zone. He can also get separation off the line of scrimmage to become a deep threat. Finally, the Patriots added Demaryius Thomas, who may have a resurgence at receiver in New England. He only had 59 receptions for 677 yards and five scores in 2018, but he had some injuries to deal with. As a third receiver, Thomas is what the Patriots need. Now, let’s look at that schedule…
  • Week 1: Pittsburgh
  • Week 2: at Miami
  • Week 3: N.Y. Jets
  • Week 4: at Buffalo
  • Week 5: at Washington
  • Week 6: N.Y. Giants
  • Week 7: at N.Y. Jets
  • Week 8: Cleveland
  • Week 9: at Baltimore
  • Week 10: BYE
  • Week 11: at Philadelphia
  • Week 12: Dallas
  • Week 13: at Houston
  • Week 14: Kansas City
  • Week 15: at Cincinnati
  • Week 16: Buffalo
  • Week 17: Miami
As in 2018, the losses in New England will come when the Patriots don’t show up at 100% as opposed to when they hit a really difficult opponent. They open with a Pittsburgh team that is a dumpster fire after Ben Roethlisberger’s tiff with Antonio Brown. Then they visit a Miami team that did beat them in Florida last year, but that was the result of a fluke play at the end of the game when the Patriots had Gronk playing safety on a Hail Mary situation, and the lumbering tight end could not solve a hook-and-ladder. Then they host the Jets and visit the Bills — two teams that will be improved but who are not ready to stop the defending AFC East champions. After that 4-0 start, the Patriots visit Washington — who drafted Dwayne Haskins to play quarterback. Will he be ready to outduel Tom Brady in the fifth game of his career? No. Neither Eli Manning nor rookie Daniel Jones will be up to the task in Week 6. Then a trip to New York to play the Jets — and that could be the first Patriots’ stumbling block, as the combination of Sam Darnold and Le’Veon Bell could deliver enough offense to outscore New England. Then the Pats come home, awakened by that loss, and handle Cleveland at home, despite the best intentions of Baker Mayfield, and visit Baltimore to shut down Lamar Jackson, going into the bye at 8-1. Can they go better than 3-4 the rest of the way? Of course. They get to play Buffalo and Miami at home to close out the season, so they only need to win two of these games: at Philadelphia, Dallas, at Houston, Kansas City and at Cincinnati. They might be able to win four of those, so a 13- or 14-win is not out of the realm of possibility. I’m going over here.
