The New England Patriots have started to slide down the odds lists for their chances to win Super Bowl LV, even after adding former MVP Cam Newton at quarterback. Losing Tom Brady through free agency seems to have dampened the sports betting world’s enthusiasm for picking the Patriots to continue their dominance of the National Football League, even though their formula — leading with a solid defense and an offense that is less spectacular than it is consistent in avoiding turnovers — remains unchanged. The Patriots did lose quite a few free agents and lost Dont’a Hightower and other contributors due to the opt-out clause for COVID-19 for this season.
So how far do you they can they go? Check out our NFL betting thoughts on how the Patriots will do this season.

2020 New England Patriots Season Betting Analysis
The Patriots have won 11 consecutive AFC East titles. They aren’t the favorites to win it in 2020, thanks to the emergence of the Buffalo Bills, but it’s important to remember that the Bills’ quarterback, Josh Allen, is still raw at the position. Where can the Patriots take advantage?
Bill Belichick’s offense will be led by Newton, who was named a team captain and starting quarterback this past week. Newton only played in two games last season because of injury, and the Panthers let him go near the end of March. Carolina brought in a new head coach in Matt Rhule and added Teddy Bridgewater to start at quarterback. Cleveland and New England were the only teams even to meet with Newton, which should give him plenty of motivation to play lights-out. In an interview with Fox Sports, Belichick praised Newton’s work ethic, saying that no one on the Pats roster works harder than their new quarterback.
Newton still has some interesting options. In the draft, the Patriots added tight ends Dalton Keene and Devin Asiasi, trying to jump-start a position that did not contribute much to the New England attack last season. Julian Edelman and James White remain solid receiving options, and Damiere Byrd will show Pats fans how quickly he can get open; his work in camp is what made New England comfortable in releasing Mohamed Sanu.
Center David Andrews missed the 2019 campaign with blood clots in his lungs, but he has been cleared to return, and he is a solid anchor in the middle of the O-line. Guards Joe Thuney and Shaq Mason are back, and they can open holes in the line. Left tackle Isaiah Wynn has returned from injury and looks healthy in camp. Right tackle Marcus Cannon opted out due to the pandemic, and Yodny Cajuste looks like the starter now, but if there is a question for O-line depth in New England, that’s where it will begin.
On defense, the Patriots have a terrific front seven, even with Hightower opting out. Lawrence Guy and Beau Allen will clog the interior on the line, and then Guy slides out to rush from the edge on passing downs, across from John Simon. Chase Winovich is another pass-rush specialist. Rookies Anfernee Jennings and Josh Uche will be expected to learn quickly with Hightower out, and Terez Hall and Ja’Whaun Bentley will have to provide more leadership at linebacker. Stephon Gilmore is the league’s best cornerback and returns, across the formation from Jason McCourty and J.C. Jackson. Jackson is a terrific cover corner on deep balls, thanks to his speed.
So if the Bills slip up, the Patriots could take a 12th straight AFC East title. But can they go further than that? The Ravens and the Chiefs are still well ahead of them in terms of talent on both sides of the ball. But Belichick’s system has taken down supposedly more talented teams before.
