The Jameis Winston era seems to have come to an end in New Orleans as the Saints brought in Derek Carr from the Las Vegas Raiders to lead the offense. Carr had a bizarre ending to 2022 when the Raiders basically told him they didn’t need him anymore, turning their offense over to Jarrett Stidham to finish the season, only to see Carr named to the Pro Bowl – and to win the quarterback skills competition. Which Carr will the Saints get? The one that led the Raiders to an AFC West title before going down to a season-ending injury – or the one that throws back-breaking interceptions in crunch time? That’s a major question facing the team this season. We have the current NFL betting odds for each game on the Saints’ slate in 2023 along with a few matchups that look like promising wagers.

It’s also important to note that the Saints lost Marcus Davenport, David Onyemata and Shy Tuttle in free agency, leaving some major holes in their defensive line. They added Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders via free agency, but they had served their prior teams primarily in depth roles, taking on rotational roles. They drafted Bryan Bresee in the first round and edge rusher Isaiah Foskey in the second, and those two could start in Week 1 on the D=line.
Week 2: at Carolina Panthers (+1)
The Panthers have named rookie quarterback Bryce Young the starter. I don’t think anyone questions whether the Alabama star will be able to find his way in the NFL, but I also don’t see him being ready to win games in Week 2? With the improvements that the Saints made up front, they should be able to pressure Young, and NFL game speed is another level up, even from SEC play. I don’t see Young outdueling Derek Carr in the second game of his NFL career. Saints to cover.
Week 6: at Houston Texans (-3)
The three quarterbacks on the depth chart in Houston are C.J. Stroud, Davis Mills, and Case Keenum. Stroud comes in as a promising rookie after coming to Houston as the second overall pick. By Week 6, he should have his NFL legs under him and have adjusted to game speed – if he wins the starting job. Mills has been the starting quarterback in Houston for the last season or so, and while he has been a gamer, he hasn’t looked like a franchise quarterback. Houston also hasn’t done much to add talent around the quarterback on either side of the ball. This is another game the Saints should win easily. Saints to win and cover.
Week 7: vs Jacksonville Jaguars (-1)
The Jaguars seem to be a little bit ahead of the Saints on the rebuilding curve. They won the AFC South last year, beat the Chargers in the wild-card playoff game and pushed the Chiefs hard in the divisional round. Trevor Lawrence is coming into his own as an NFL quarterback, and the team has put talent around him at tailback and wide receiver. The Saints are getting a little love here as the home team, but the Jaguars aren’t scared to travel and win. Jaguars to win and cover.
