So far, Aaron Rodgers has brought a couple of offensive snaps and an off-season of drama to the New York Jets.
He went down just a few plays into the 2023 season with a torn Achilles tendon. He flirted with the idea of a postseason return, but the Jets couldn’t get a wild-card berth thanks, in large part, to inconsistent play from the backup quarterbacks.
So the most important pickup in this past off season might have been Tyrod Taylor, who gives the Jets a legit backup quarterback instead of the mess that Zach Wilson and the others who got starts made last year.
Also, tailback Breece Hall looks to return full of confidence, almost two years down the road from his ACL tear.
An offense that has a dynamic Hall carrying the back and a quarterback that can deliver down the field to his own team on a regular basis would help the Jets, a team known for its defense but not really for anything else at this point.
Can the Jets win an AFC East in which each team has a lot of questions? Let’s look at some NFL betting futures opportunities and go through the Jets’ schedule.
NFL Futures Odds and Season Preview: New York Jets 2024
- Winner Odds Super Bowl: +2200
- Odds to Win the AFC: +1125
- AFC East Odds to Win: +189
- Odds to Make the Playoffs: -161
- Win Totals:: 9.5 (-153 Over / +130 Under)
Week 1: at San Francisco 49ers
Monday, 8:15 pm ET. This is the first of six prime-time appearances for the Jets in the first 11 weeks of the regular season.
The league did something similar last year, in the hopes that Rodgers would bring the league tons of interest.
Then he went down, and the prime-time viewers got a lot of Zach Wilson and Mike White. Even if Rodgers stays healthy, though, the 49ers are a juggernaut. 49ers to win. 0-1.
at Tennessee Titans, Week 2 NFL
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET The Titans have a pretty solid defense, and so do the Jets. However, with Will Levis at quarterback and Tony Pollard at tailback, it’s hard to see Tennessee mounting much in the way of touchdown drives. Jets to win. 1-1.
vs New England Patriots Week 3 NFL
Thursday, 8:15 pm ET The Patriots have a new head coach and a new starting quarterback. Traveling on a short week for the third game of the season is not an ideal mix for a sophisticated game play here. Jets to win. 2-1.
Week 4 NFL: vs Denver Broncos
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET | Zach Wilson returns to the Meadowlands with the Denver Broncos. It’s likely that Bo Nix will be the starting quarterback for the visitors, but either way, the rebuilding Broncos aren’t going to be ready to beat the Jets in an early afternoon start on the East Coast. Jets to win. 3-1.
vs Minnesota Vikings, Week 5 Jets
Sunday, 9:30 am ET London Justin Jefferson vs Sauce Gardner will be one of the best WR-CB showdowns in the league this season. But can J.J. McCarthy, or whoever the Vikings roll out at quarterback, get him the ball on time?
Sam Darnold might get the start for the Vikings – against the Jets, who drafted him out of USC. Jets to win. 4-1.
Jets Week 6 NFL: vs Buffalo Bills
Monday, 8:15 pm ET Aaron Rodgers vs Josh Allen. Allen won’t have Gabe Davis or Stefon Diggs running routes for him. He will have a salty Jets pass rush getting after him.
The Jets opted not to have their bye week after going to London, though, and the potential for fatigue (and a letdown) is huge. Bills to win.
at Pittsburgh Steelers, Week 7 NFL
Sunday, 8:20 pm ET Another tough defense awaits the Jets in Pittsburgh, but I’m not sure Russell Wilson is the right quarterback for the Steelers’ offense.
If Rodgers is still healthy at this point, I see him leading the Jets to a W here. Jets to win. 5-2.
Week 8 NFL: at New England Patriots
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET Will it be Drake Maye or Joe Milton III running the New England offense by this point? Or will Jacoby Brissett still have the keys? Either way, this is still just a rebuilding team. Jets to win. 6-2.
vs Houston Texans, Week 9
Thursday, 8:15 pm ET That’s right – the Jets have two Thursday games, and they’re not back-to-back. They will welcome a Houston Texans that might be the best team in the AFC other than the Chiefs. Texans to win. 6-3.
at Arizona Cardinals Week 10
Sunday, 4:25 pm ET Will Kyler Murray be back in the saddle as the undisputed leader of the Cardinals by this point?
Will he be able to dent the Jets’ defense on the road? The Jets still won’t have had an ugly road game yet by this point, and this is an excellent candidate given the dynamic way Murray plays the game. Cards to win. 6-4.
Week 11 NFL: vs Indianapolis Colts
Sunday, 8:20 pm ET Anthony Richardson should have a healthier season this time around, and the Colts still have elite tailback Jonathan Taylor. Their defense matches up nicely with the Jets’ offense as well.
However, the Jets bounce back from that nonsense in the desert. Jets to win. 7-4.
NFL Week 12: BYE
Week 13 New York Jets: vs Seattle Seahawks
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET The Seahawks have to travel to the East Coast and play in the early afternoon slot. With this game on December 1, expect chilly temperatures – and expect the Seahawks to be out of postseason contention.
Without the motivational gifts of Pete Carroll, it’s hard to see the Seahawks pushing the Jets too hard. Jets to win. 8-4.
at Miami Dolphins Week 14
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET The Dolphins have the highest ceiling on offense in the AFC East this year. The questions surround their defense.
They will be able to drop points on the Jets this year, so the question will be which team has the ball last. Dolphins to win. 8-5.
Week 15: at Jacksonville Jaguars
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET Two weeks in a row in sunny Florida in December for the Jets.
I’m not sure that the Jaguars can bounce all the way back from the ugly finish in 2023, especially with Houston pushing them in the AFC South, and I’m also not sure if they can keep up with a Rodgers-led offense. Jets to win. 9-5.
vs L.A. Rams Week 16
Sunday, 4:25 pm ET The Rams don’t have Aaron Donald anymore and will have to deal with the aftermath of an over performing 2023. Jets to win. 10-5.
NFL Week 17: at Buffalo Bills
Sunday, 1:00 pm ET Near the end of the year means cold conditions, if not all kinds of snow, in Buffalo.
This game could be for the AFC East (although the Dolphins might have something to say about that). I see the Jets getting payback for the home loss. Jets to win. 11-5.
New York Jets Week 18: vs Miami Dolphins
Date/Time TBA The warm-weather meeting was a high-scoring affair. Playing in the cold will lead to fewer points, and the Jets benefit from the defense-first atmosphere. Jets to win. 12-5.
