The fall of 2014 featured a great deal of intrigue when it came to discussing Adrian Peterson’s football future. As he sat on the commissioner’s special exemption list, awaiting the outcome of criminal charges stemming from taking a switch to his toddler, all sorts of stories started to come out. There was the story of Peterson calling Jerry Jones on his cell phone during a game and talking about how he would love to become a Dallas Cowboy. There was the story saying that Peterson’s indefinite ban could leave him off the NFL betting field permanently.
Then, of course, common sense and the law caught up with Roger Goodell’s fantasy that he didn’t have to follow his own league’s policies when he set player discipline. The most famous example of this, of course, came when a former federal judge strongly rebuked Goodell for suspending Ray Rice for two games after his assault on his fiancee and then replacing that suspension with an indefinite ban once the video leaked – and then suggesting that Rice had lied about the incident during their meeting. In Peterson’s case, Goodell was slightly smarter, allowing an ostensibly neutral arbitrator to hear the appeal, but in reality that arbitrator was a former NFL executive. When the case went to court, once again, Goodell’s attempt to go around league policy got slapped down.
The #Vikings roster made a 21-spot jump and now ranks 8th in the NFL.

While Ray Rice is still waiting for a team to call, though, once Peterson became eligible to return, the next topic of conversation was that big contract, as he is owed $12.75 million for the 2015 season. At first, Peterson insisted on a trade, saying that the Vikings should have been more supportive during his suspension. When nothing came through, there was speculation that he would hold out. Of course, if he held out, he would be leaving all that money on the table.
The suspense, of course, came to an end when Peterson reported to OTA workouts with the Vikings. As of now, he is the #1 running back on the depth chart, having easily leapt over Jerick McKinnon on the depth chart. With Adrian Peterson and Cordarrelle Patterson as the main offensive weapons at quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s disposal, it’s easy to get excited about this year for the Vikings.
According to Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner, Peterson isn’t showing any signs of rust after his lost season. Turner had Bridgewater play from the shotgun formation a lot last year, but that may have had to do more with the limitations of McKinnon and Matt Asiata carrying the ball last year. With Peterson back on the field, there should be a lot more balance in the Minnesota offense.
Is the drama over? There is still the possibility that Peterson could hold out for an extension during training camp, and that he could ask for more guaranteed money. There is also the sense that the team has had enough complaining for Peterson – after all, he received millions of dollars from the team last year, even though he only played in one game and rushed for 75 yards. The images of the damage that his switch did to his young son’s legs and pelvis area were shocking, but it’s clear that the team has put that in the rear view mirror and is ready for a positive season ahead.
So for now, Peterson won’t be wearing the Dallas Cowboys star any time soon. This season could be one in which the Vikings break out, if Bridgewater emerges to fulfill his potential and Peterson romps all over the field this season. Look for the Vikings to push the Packers this season.
