Why should you bet on the Giants?

The woes for New York begin with their offensive line. In eight games, quarterback Eli Manning has been sacked 19 times. The leading rusher is Orleans Darkwa, who has 345 yards on the year on 67 attempts with a touchdown, while rookie Wayne Gallman has added just 182 yards. Given that wide receivers Brandon Marshall, Odell Beckham Jr and Dwayne Harris have all gone on injured reserve, the Giants need to be able to establish the running game, as Manning’s best remaining target is tight end Evan Engram, who leads the team with 34 catches and has scored four touchdowns this season. What about the defense? That’s the unit that team management spent so much money to improve two off-seasons ago, but they looked awful against the Rams last week. The Giants permitted two touchdowns on plays that went longer than 50 yards, including a 52-yard dump pass-and-run to Robert Woods on a third-and-33 situation. The Rams gained 473 yards in the win. The Giants need to upgrade their attitude on defense, and coming in against San Francisco, they definitely have a chance to build some confidence.

Why should you put your money on the 49ers?

San Francisco has come close to victory several times, including a 26-24 setback at Washington. They had a five-game run in which they lost by a combined 13 points, but since then things have gotten uglier, beginning with a 40-10 rout they took from Dallas at home. They only lost by 10 last week, falling to Arizona, but the Cardinals came in with a backup quarterback leading the offense in Drew Stanton. The Niners are certainly easing new quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo into the mix, as coach Kyle Shanahan has not committed to playing Garoppolo at all this year. He is expected to serve as the backup to C.J. Beathard this week, but it will be interesting to see how long Shanahan keeps Garoppolo on the bench. The longer he stays there, the more we can conclude that San Francisco is playing for that first draft choice instead of trying to get some wins this year. Are the 49ers a safe bet in Week 10? The San Francisco defense has played tough at times but (as one might expect on a winless team) failed time and time again to get key stops. If you like the 49ers, you see them getting to Manning enough times to force some turnovers while moving the ball down the field. Beathard doesn’t really have a down-the-field arm, but he is mobile and can extend drives with his legs.
