Oakland at Philadelphia NFL Spread & Week 16 Analysis

Written by on December 22, 2017

The Oakland Raiders saw their playoff hopes just about vanish last week, as they fell in the NFL spread to Dallas at home in prime time last week. Dallas led that game 10-0 and 17-10, but the Raiders roared back to tie the game at 17. Dallas drove down the field but had to settle for a field goal, but then Oakland got new life in their next drive with a 57-yard pass interference penalty on Dallas’ Jourdan Lewis. Derek Carr scrambled to the end zone in the waning seconds, reaching out for the pylon with the ball only to have it knocked out of his grasp and roll through the end zone for a touchback. The Raiders have to follow up that gut punch with a trip to Philadelphia, where the 12-2 Eagles are playing for home field throughout the playoffs — but they are relying on backup quarterback Nick Foles to get them there. Let’s see who’s favored in the NFL odds.

Why should you bet on the Raiders?

The Raiders really only have themselves to blame for the loss last week. They missed a 39-yard field goal at the end of the first half that would have turned a 10-0 score into a 10-3 margin. Carr had a decent game, going 21 for 38, but he missed a lot of open receivers and settled for a lot of checkdowns, which is why he only threw for 171 yards. He did find two receivers for touchdowns and scrambled several times for 47 yards. Tailback Marshawn Lynch had one of his better games of the season, rumbling for 76 yards on 18 attempts. Oakland’s defense is the cause for many of their woes. They did have the two takeaways from Dallas, but they couldn’t stop the Dallas offense when they needed to, particularly in the second half. The certainty that Dallas had for finding open receivers (once the offensive line started blocking in the second half) meant that the Raiders had to sell out on the pass rush, which led to some holes in the secondary. If the Raiders’ defense can’t play more consistently, Foles and the Eagles’ offense will pick them apart.

Why should you put your money on the Eagles?

Philadelphia did clinch a first-round bye with their win over the New York Giants last week, but their defense was far from their usual selves as they had to hold on for a 34-29 win. That was the first time the Giants (who fell to 2-12) had scored more than 20 points in a game since they lost to San Francisco back on November 12. The Giants actually led this game, 20-7, at one point until the Eagles found their offense. Foles went 24 for 38 for 237 yards and four touchdowns, so the offense looks like it can move under Foles. The Giants don’t have a great defense, but neither do the Raiders, so Foles should have time and space to move the team down the field. The Eagles gave up an uncharacteristic number of yards on the night, as Eli Manning threw the ball for 429 yards for the Giants. That’s 120 more yards than the Eagles have averaged in allowing for total offense this season. The Eagles lead the NFL in fewest running yards permitted (71.5), but the Raiders will test them in the passing game. Even though the Raiders are supposed to be without star wideout Amari Cooper, they still have Michael Crabtree and a number of other targets.

Expert Pick and Final Prediction

Given that Philadelphia is playing a backup quarterback, this nine-point line is somewhat surprising. I think the Eagles will scratch out another win, but Oakland will make it hard for them to do so, as the Raiders could technically claw back into the AFC West race if they win out and Kansas City collapses again. I predict a final score of Philadelphia 27, Oakland 23.
