Week 3 TNF: Patriots vs Jets Matchup Analysis & Expert Tips

Week 3 Thursday Night Football: Patriots vs Jets Matchup Analysis & Expert Tips

Written by on September 17, 2024

NFL Game Odds TNF: Patriots vs Jets | The New York Jets evened up their 2024 record at 1-1 with a win over the Tennessee Titans, but they lost a key part of their pass rush as Jermaine Johnson was carted off the field.

The diagnosis is a tear of the Achilles tendon, which will keep him out for an extended period of time. One name that is already emerging as a potential replacement is free agent Yannick Ngakoue.

At the age of 29, Ngakoue has played on six different rosters over his eight-season NFL career.

In 123 games (including 115 starts), he has posted 61 sacks, 124 quarterback hits, and 224 total tackles, while forcing 21 fumbles.

Last year he played on a one-year, $10.5 million deal, but as of this writing, he’s on his couch waiting for a team to call.

Will the Jets pay him what he wants? We will see. Meanwhile, the Jets await the New England Patriots, also 1-1, in this week’s Thursday prime-time showdown.

New England Patriots +240

New England has dominated this series, leading the all-time rivalry 74-55-1. Most of the Patriots’ edge came during the Bill Belichick-Tom Brady era, though, and the Jets look to start erasing that deficit now that the Patriots are headed into an extended rebuild. Belichick’s last game coaching the Patriots came against the Jets, who rolled, 17-3, in New England for their first road win over the Pats since 2010, when they won the divisional playoff game there.

Both of the Patriots’ first two games have been decided by single figures. This includes an impressive grind of a win at Cincinnati in the opener. They came home and took a disappointing loss to Seattle on Sunday, but the truth is that, until either Drake Maye or Joe Milton III grow into a franchise-level quarterback, Jacoby Brissett is an adequate caretaker but isn’t the sort of quarterback who will put up massive numbers. If you like the Patriots, you see this as more of a defensive struggle with New England capitalizing on mistakes and doing just enough either to win, or just to cover.

New York Jets -310

The Jets’ Monday night opener in San Francisco was an ugly one, and their win at Tennessee in Week 2 showed that there are still issues to fix. The Jets trailed the Titans on the road, and Aaron Rodgers just threw for 176 yards on the day. He did have a pair of touchdown passes, one to tailback Braelon Allen, who also scored on the ground.

The Jets’ defense proved crucial, stopping the Titans on fourth-and-goal from the New York 14 in the last seconds of the game. Will McDonald IV led the team with three sacks. However, in addition to Johnson, the Jets’ defense also lost linebacker CJ Mosley. Unlike Johnson, Mosley is questionable for Thursday at this point. If you’re wondering if the Jets have been at least covering spreads lately, they are just 3-9 against the spread in their last 12 contests.

Patriots vs Jets TNF Final Score and Prediction

Divisional rivalries tend to be tight games, particularly early in the season. Thursday night games tend to feature simpler offenses as teams have fewer days to put in new wrinkles. While the Jets have the talent on both sides of the ball to win this, their depleted pass rush will give the Patriots a little more room to operate.

I predict a final score of New York 20, New England 17.
