NFL Picks to Win the AFC East: Odds for the Bills to Win

Written by on August 6, 2021

Josh Allen signed an extension with Buffalo that will make him the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future. The deal runs six years and is worth $258 million on paper, with $150 million guaranteed. Given the stout roster the Bills have on both sides of the ball, they should dominate the AFC East once again this season, as the other three teams in the division are in various states of rebuilding.

We have the NFL betting odds for each team to win the division, as well as updated news about each squad.

NFL News: Picks to Win the AFC East

Team Odds
Buffalo Bills -150
Miami Dolphins +350
New England Patriots +350
New York Jets +2500

The New York Jets will certainly get a bump out of the arrival of Robert Saleh, who replaces Adam Gase as head coach. The Jets have a lot more talent than their performance indicated, such as edge rusher Carl Lawson, who is the perfect player for the aggressive sort of disruption Saleh likes to incorporate in his pass rush schemes. Marcus Maye returns at safety, one of the best under-the-radar players at that position. New quarterback Zach Wilson, fresh out of BYU, is already linking up with second-round choice Elijah Moore in the passing game. The O-line looks solid, so this will be a team that competes in 2021. Are they worth a flyer with that huge value to win the division? Not with Josh Allen coming back in Buffalo.

The Miami Dolphins are about to find out just what they have at quarterback in Tua Tagovailoa. He has the skills to hit routes on timing and rhythm well enough to put up touchdowns in this league, but his arm doesn’t have enough strength for him to be a deep-ball threat in the pro ranks. He won’t have Ryan Fitzpatrick to come in and turn games around for him, which was a factor in the team going from a 3-3 start to a 10-6 finish. The defense is elite, so as long as Tagovailoa can keep the ball moving, the Dolphins should contend for a wild card once again.

The New England Patriots are very pleased with what they’ve seen out of Cam Newton in training camp so far. The fog that seemed to plague him after his case of COVID-19 has lifted, and he is getting along well with Mac Jones, the heir apparent at quarterback. The defense will be back this year after a number of COVID-19 opt-outs in 2020, and edge rusher Matthew Judon and defensive back Jalen Mills join the roster. The team added tight ends Jonnu Smith and Hunter Henry in free agency, much bigger names than Nelson Agholor, who has something to prove at wide receiver. This is another team that could threaten for a wild card.

The Buffalo Bills have largely stood pat after their run to the AFC Championship last year. The running game was an area of need, but the team believes that Zach Moss can boost the team’s balance. The defense needed more of an edge presence, and they used their first two draft choices. Gregory Rousseau should be able to shoot through different gaps to disrupt the quarterback, and Carlos Basham has the speed to tear around the edge. The secondary and linebacker groups are already solid, so the only real question, if the Bills live up to their potential, is whether this team has progressed enough to knock off the Kansas City Chiefs. For now, though, the only real news out of Buffalo comes from wide receiver Cole Beasley and his Twitter rants about the COVID-19 vaccine, as the team tries on stability for the first time since the 1990s.
