NFL Preseason Week 1: Detroit at Indianapolis Odds & Betting Analysis

Written by on August 11, 2017

Historically, the Indianapolis Colts have posted dreadful records in the preseason, no matter what their regular season fortunes would turn out to resemble, because their last three head coaches focused more on roster evaluation and working out the kinks on both sides of the ball than securing wins that don’t help you get to the playoffs. Detroit has won 8 of their last 12 preseason games, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re all about getting the W on Sunday afternoon either. The NFL odds for this matchup is a Pick’em, so you might want to check out the over/under before placing any bets on this NFL Preseason game.

Why should you bet on the Lions?

Indianapolis has an 0-6 record, both straight up and ATS, in their last six home preseason games. Andrew Luck (shoulder) will not appear at all on Sunday afternoon, which means we’ll be seeing a lot of Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris. We saw a lot of Morris last year, as he was the NFL leader in preseason passing yards (531) and touchdowns (4). He posted four plays of 40 or more yards last preseason and could end up taking the backup job over the journeyman Tolzien. Rookie Phillip Walker could end up finishing the game. So if the Lions can get some stout play from their front seven, they should be able to force the Colts to punt a lot. The Colts need to figure out who will play at quarterback, if Andrew Luck (shoulder) has to miss extended time going into the regular season.

How Bad is Andrew Luck’s Injury?

Current reports indicate that he could miss up to the first six weeks of the season, which would put the Colts in a huge jam (Kaepernick, anyone? Kaepernick? Are you sure he isn’t better than Scott Tolzien?), so the Colts need to see what they have. Take a look at Matt Asiata, whom the Lions signed to give their running backs some depth. Last year, the Lions only averaged 79.9 yards on the ground, a number that has to improve to make life a little bit easier on quarterback Matthew Stafford. Also take a look at the Lions’ secondary, as they have to get better in coverage if the Lions want to return to the postseason.

Why should you put your money on the Colts?

Like the Colts, the Lions are going to show us a lot of backup quarterback action on Sunday afternoon. While Matthew Stafford might come in for those first few series, then it’s time to take a look at Jake Rudock and Brad Kaaya, the rookie from Miami. Rudock is expected to win the backup slot while Kaaya sits on the third string, but reports indicate that we’ll see a lot of Kaaya in this game. The Lions throw the ball a lot — 64.6 percent of the time last year — so if the Colts can mount a rush and cover, these neophytes should put up some ducks that the Colts can pick off. Are the Colts a safe bet in Week 1 of the NFL Preseason? As a matter of fact, keep an eye on cornerback Malik Hooker, who the Colts drafted to bolster that Swiss-cheese secondary. They permitted 262.5 yards per game through the air last year, #26 in the NFL, so they need to improve in that area. If the Colts can play some defense, they have the better overall talent with the ball, even further down the depth chart.

Expert NFL Preseaosn Pick and Final Score Prediction

Without Matthew Stafford playing much, the loss of Andrew Luck won’t hurt the Colts’ chances like it would in a regular-season game. Based on the way the defenses stack up, I see the Colts outmatching the Lions down the stretch and rolling to a 19-16 victory.
