NFL Preseason Week 1: Philadelphia at Green Bay Odds & Game Info

Written by on August 9, 2017

Both the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles enter the 2017 preseason with a number of changes to their rosters. The Packers shored up some issues in their offensive line, and the Eagles brought in some contributors at wide receiver and in the secondary to make them more competitive in the NFC East this season — and they brought Nick Foles back home, now as a backup to second-year quarterback Carson Wentz. The two teams last faced in Week 12 last year, with the Packers winning, 27-13, to start that six-game winning streak that would vault them to the top of the NFC North. Check out our preview of this NFL Preseason matchup as you choose the best NFL odds for the opening week of the preseason.

Why should you bet on the Eagles?

Did you know that Philadelphia rides in on a four-game winning streak against the spread in preseason games? The addition of such offensive weapons as wideout Alshon Jeffery and tailback LeGarrette Blount means that Philadelphia will have an easier time moving the ball. Even though these starters will only see scant playing time, the first series or two could build some momentum. Expect Foles and Matt McGloin to play the vast majority of the playing time under center, as they spar for the #2 slot on the depth chart. The Eagles have also burnished their secondary, although that unit may not get much of a test as Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to make an appearance on the field, especially beyond the first series. The same goes for Davante Adams, Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson — Rodgers’ favorite targets. With the Packers focusing on the evaluation of players in the lower tier of the depth chart, the Eagles should have plenty of opportunities to score, as Foles has been an NFL-caliber starting quarterback. The Eagles head into the NFL preseason matchup as the underdogs.

Why should you put your money on the Packers?

Green Bay has a 3-1 record straight up in their last four contests in the preseason. In this game, though, they will be focusing on improving their running game. In 2016, they came in #22 in the NFL averaging just 103.2 yards on the ground, and #30 in rushing attempts per game, at 22.8. The offseason saw the departure of Eddie Lacy, which means that Ty Montgomery is the favorite for the starting slot. Look at rookie Jamaal Williams to use this game as an opportunity to impress the coaching staff as he looks to solidify his own slot on the roster. One of the Packers’ biggest flaws a year ago was their secondary. As energizing as their offense was, their pass defense could let other teams get right back into games at just the worst times. The first and second halves of their divisional round win in Dallas showed that, as they roared out to a big lead at halftime and then had to hold on for their lives as Dak Prescott led the Cowboys on a huge comeback. If the Packers have improved in their defensive backfield, then they should be able to force the Eagles into punting situations and use their ground game to drive the action. The Eagles head into the NFL Preseason matchup as underdogs.

Expert NFL Preseason Pick and Final Score Prediction

I appreciate the improvements that the Packers have made on their defensive end. However, I think that Green Bay will be focused more on evaluation of talent than the final score of this game, and the talent the Eagles will have on the field will be at a higher level for the balance of the game. For these reasons, I see Philadelphia prevailing in the end, 23-20.
