Just another crazy feature of this 2020 NFL season is the shifting that has taken place at quarterback. Many teams have had to go with backups at quarterback, and the Denver Broncos even had to pull a wide receiver off their practice squad to play quarterback on Sunday due to COVID-19 protocols. A typical example of some of the chaos has been the Dallas Cowboys, who lost Dak Prescott to a fractured ankle. Then, Andy Dalton went down with a concussion and caught COVID-19. Third-stringer Ben DiNucci started one game, and then Garrett Gilbert came in and started a game before Dalton could return.
Let’s look at the latest power rankings at the quarterback position as you plan your NFL betting.
NFL News: QB Power Rankings after Week 12
#1 Patrick Mahomes (KC)
Mahomes threw for 462 yards and three scores against Tampa Bay, and the day didn’t feel like anything out of the ordinary. He found Tyreek Hill for 269 of those yards.
#2 Aaron Rodgers (GB)
Rodgers leads the NFL with 33 touchdown passes, but since the Packers have only beaten one winning team, he’s going under the radar. He looks outstanding, especially for a 35-year-old signal caller.
#3 Russell Wilson (SEA)
Against Philadelphia, Wilson had 52- and 32-yard plays with D.K. Metcalf, and he avoided the turnover bug.
#4 Deshaun Watson (HOU)
Watson leads the NFL in yards per attempt at 8.8, even though he doesn’t have DeAndre Hopkins anymore. It’s too bad that he’s on an awful team.
#5 Josh Allen (BUF)
Allen has dipped a bit since that 4-0 start, but he is still playing elite ball. He had 157 passing yards against the Chargers, including a bad interception. Can he up his game again down the stretch?
#6 Justin Herbert (LAC)
Herbert is on pace to throw for more than 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns as a rookie. Can you name another rookie who has done that? That’s right, he would be the first one.
#7 Kyler Murray (ARI)
The Cardinals have lost three of four, but Murray is growing as a quarterback. He’s smart, accurate, and he has a howitzer of an arm — and he’s often the fastest player on the field.
#8 Ryan Tannehill (TEN)
Tannehill is limited on the deep ball, and he does much better out of the play-action set. No one is more efficient with the ball than he is right now.
#9 Tom Brady (TB)
Brady looked great on some deep balls against Kansas City, including a bomb to Mike Evans. However, he missed some simple throws early and had two bad picks.
#10 Derek Carr (LV)
He has 19 touchdown passes against four interceptions, but he looked awful against Atlanta. Yes, his receivers dropped passes and his line didn’t block, but Carr didn’t make the plays that were available to him.
#11 Matt Ryan (ATL)
Ryan has been terrific during a lost season for these Falcons.
#12 Ben Roethlisberger (PIT)
He’s doing a great job driving the bus with a conservative, quick offense this season, and the Steelers are the league’s last unbeaten team.
#13 Philip Rivers (IND)
The Colts play a very conservative offense to keep Rivers from having to carry the team. That’s worked, as he only has nine interceptions. Can it prosper in the playoffs?
#14 Jared Goff (LAR)
Two picks, including a pick-six, doomed the Rams against San Francisco. He needs an offense that uses quick throws and a play-action scheme.
#15 Lamar Jackson (BAL)
He will sit on Wednesday against Pittsburgh (get ready for RG3) , but when he returns, he needs to be more accurate on throws outside the numbers.
#16 Kirk Cousins (MIN)
Yes, Cousins is making a ton of cash to be right in the center of these rankings. He looked great against Carolina, going 34 of 45 for 307 yards and three touchdown passes, including 13 of 19 with two scores throwing the ball at least ten yards downfield.
#17 Teddy Bridgewater (CAR)
With D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson, Bridgewater is stretching the field more than he did in years past, although he got conservative again versus Minnesota. He also is decent with ball security.
#18 Matthew Stafford (DET)
This has to be Stafford’s last year with the Lions, right? Lots of picks, lots of losses, and a new coach next year.
#19 Baker Mayfield (CLE)
Mayfield’s key for success is to go out of the play action. In throws of more than 10 yards through the air, he was 8 of 12 with two touchdowns, and he had 258 yards overall. His goal-line gaffe is forgivable, but it won’t be in the playoffs.
#20 Daniel Jones (NYG)
Jones might return from a hamstring injury, but the G-men might also use Colt McCoy. Against Cincinnati, he threw for 213 yards without a single turnover, so that’s progress.
#21 Cam Newton (NE)
Despite throwing for just 84 yards and throwing two picks, the Patriots beat the Arizona Cardinals. He makes big plays in the running game, but he’s not thrown well since returning from COVID-19, and the Patriots still don’t have any receivers.
#22 Alex Smith (WAS)
This is a terrific comeback story, but Smith needs to start stretching the field.
#23 Ryan Fitzpatrick (MIA)
FitzMagic is back! Tua Tagovailoa had a promising start, but he is out with a thumb injury. Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes in a rout of the Jets. The key is to avoid turnovers.
#24 Andy Dalton (DAL)
Dalton looked terrific against Minnesota, but having two key offensive line injuries against Washington had him hurrying the ball out of the pocket for short throws. He needs to go back to stretching the field.
#25 Nick Mullens (SF)
Mullens can make some outstanding throws — and he can make some dreadful mistakes. He can get outside the pocket and run, so he could give Buffalo a hard time.
#26 Drew Lock (DEN)
Lock is on course to start against the Chiefs on Sunday night. Accuracy remains a concern for Lock.
#27 Carson Wentz (PHI)
Wentz is tops in the NFL…in turnovers. It may be time to give Jalen Hurts a chance, but if you watched him play for Oklahoma, you can see that there is plenty of room for concern in terms of ball security and accuracy.
#28 Taysom Hill (NO)
Taysom Hill ran for two touchdowns against Denver, but after a good start against Atlanta, he threw for 78 yards and a pick. Will we see Jameis Winston next week?
#29 Mitch Trubisky (CHI)
Is Nick Foles really worse than Mitch Trubisky? Is it that bad? Trubisky had two ugly picks that doomed the Bears against Green Bay.
#30 Sam Darnold (NYJ)
That 3:8 TD:INT ratio is unsightly, but the lack of talent around Darnold, including a Swiss-cheese O-line, hasn’t helped him.
#31 Mike Glennon (JAX)
Mike Glennon almost led the Jaguars to a win over Cleveland last week, throwing for 235 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Let’s see if he can do it again this week.
#32 Brandon Allen (CIN)
Joe Burrow went down after tearing two ligaments in his knee. Brandon Allen, who has experience with coach Zac Taylor, has come off the practice squad as the new starter. So far, he has posted a 10.9 QBR.
