Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford injured his thumb in last week’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and he remains a game-time decision for Sunday’s game in Green Bay against the Packers. Backup quarterback Brett Rypien would start if Stafford cannot go, but after Rypien, things get murky. Rookie quarterback Stetson Bennett, who missed Week 1 with a right shoulder injury and went on the reserve/non-football injury list three days later, will likely not return this season, so the team went out and signed free agent Dresser Winn. This line opened at Green Bay +1 but has shifted the other way in the wake of this news. The Packers’ front office indicated that their quarterback, Jordan Love, has ten games left to make his case to be the team’s starting quarterback after some inconsistent play this year, so he has motivation to get things going in the right direction. Why should you bet on the Rams?
Another injury woe for the Rams comes from wide receiver Puka Nacua, who already has 795 receiving yards during his terrific rookie season, but a knee injury has him questionable. The Rams score 21.9 points per game and are eighth in passing offense right now, so the team needs Nacua and Stafford back. Cooper Kupp has returned, so Rypien will still have an elite target, but if Nacua has to sit, that allows the Packers to double Kupp.
The Rams’ defense has been less than solid, permitting 5.3 yards per play (19th overall) and 23.0 points per game (21st). They are tied for dead last in takeaways coming into Week 9, and they are 31st in sacks with 15. They have only held one team (Arizona) under 23 points since Week 3. This is definitely not the defense that won a Super Bowl during Stafford’s first season with the team, and this unit needs to put out more effort to pull off the upset in Green Bay on Sunday afternoon.

Why should you put your money on the Packers?
Even though the Minnesota Vikings lost Kirk Cousins around halftime last week, Green Bay still lost to them by 14 points, and now the Pack are riding a four-game skid. The Green Bay offense has only totaled 40 points in their last three games, which is what inspired the ultimatum for Love to start producing. The O-line is decent in pass protection; Love has only taken 14 sacks, fifth-lowest in the league. However, he has thrown eight interceptions in eight games, and the team only gains 4.9 yards per play, 23rd overall. Tailback Aaron Jones’ injury hasn’t helped things, but A.J. Dillon has not stepped up in his absence.
The defense has only allowed 60 points over the last three games, but shipping cornerback Rasul Douglas at the trade deadline could lead to some leaks on that side of the ball. Douglas was key in a secondary that had helped the defense rank sixth in fewest passing yards permitted and was a leader in the Green Bay locker room. The Packers only have six takeaways this season and could use some more impact plays.

Rams vs Packers Final Score and Prediction
The Rams do have the pass rush to force the Packers into third-and-long situations and to generate turnovers. The Rams also average 4.2 yards per running play and should be able to move the ball against the Packers. Even though both teams are struggling to move the ball and score, the Rams have more skill players, even if Rypien has to start. I predict a final score of Los Angeles 23, Green Bay 16.
