Updated Super Bowl LIII Odds – September 17th Edition

Written by on September 17, 2018

Now that we’re two weeks into the 2018 NFL regular season, it’s time to take another look at the updated odds that each of the 32 teams has to win Super Bowl LIII, according to the bookmakers in Las Vegas. You’re going to see more NFC teams near the top of the list, because that conference has more contending teams. However, the New England Patriots remain at the top of the AFC side of the list and are likely to stay there until they go more than a season without appearing in the Super Bowl. Take a look at the latest Super Bowl LIII odds as well as our comments about some of the contenders.

Why are the Rams at the top of this list? They’ve looked the crispest so far. They haven’t, admittedly, played any good teams yet. They went up to Oakland to open Monday Night Football and took down a rebuilding Raiders team by 20 — despite trailing at halftime. Then they dismantled the Arizona Cardinals by a 34-0 score in Week 2. Their defense looks better than Minnesota’s, who gave up 22 offensive points to the Packers. The Vikings made it to the NFC Championship last year, but their defense hasn’t been as great, and their offense has sputtered. They had to mount a furious comeback to tie Green Bay at Lambeau on Sunday, but then their special teams fell apart as they had two different chances to kick the winning field goal and missed both of them. The Jaguars and Patriots are the top two favorites from the AFC. The Jaguars delivered a surprisingly convincing win over New England at home, but the combination of the frustration from the AFC Championship and that Florida humidity likely played a significant role. The Patriots didn’t look great in their win over Houston, and they don’t look particularly interested right now. It would be interesting to get a mic in that locker room. Then, we have three exciting teams: Atlanta, Kansas City and Philadelphia. The Eagles are going to start Carson Wentz in Week 3, but Nick Foles wasn’t really the problem for the Birds against Tampa Bay, as the vaunted Philly defense could not slow down the Ryan Fitzpatrick Show. The Chiefs look terrific — but they often look terrific in September. The Patrick Mahomes experiment is paying big dividends so far, but when opponents start to break down the KC film and look for vulnerabilities, how will Andy Reid respond? That’s the problem with  Reid-coached teams — not the original scheme, but the adjustments down the stretch. And then Atlanta beat Carolina convincingly on Sunday. Where was that offense in Philadelphia? Right behind that trio are the Green Bay Packers. If you think about it, the Pack has had a ridiculous amount of luck in their quarterback play for the last couple of decades, with the brilliant Brett Favre followed by Aaron Rodgers. Without Rodgers, we see how dreadful the Pack would be. Brett Hundley and DeShone Kizer were barely able to move the ball during Rodgers’ absence, but his presence led to a win over the Bears. They couldn’t stave off the Vikings in crunch time, though, even at home, but the bettors are keeping the Packers higher on the odds list than they should be because of the money they’re putting down.
