Super Bowl LIX Odds: Early Favorites to Win in the Upcoming Season

Super Bowl LIX Odds: Early Favorites to Win in the Upcoming Season

Going into the 2024 NFL season, there are teams that have reason to be excited for the first time in a long time. The Washington Commanders have the architect of the Dallas defense, Dan Quinn, as their new head coach. They also have Jayden Daniels, the LSU phenom, coming in at quarterback after a mixed season from Sam Howell. With the Giants still stuck in rebuilding mode and the Cowboys slipping into what may turn into an extended rebuild beginning in 2025, the NFC East has become interesting, especially if you consider how tough the Commanders have played against Philadelphia the past few seasons. There are also some teams on the precipice of real problems. Yes, Cleveland has an ironclad defense, but what is really going to happen with Deshaun Watson? Will he ever show the promise he showed in Houston, which motivated the Browns to give him that mammoth contract? Yes, the Jets have Aaron Rodgers back and healthy. How sturdy will he be at the age of 40, playing on a surgically reconstructed Achilles tendon? Let’s take a look at each team’s odds to win the Super Bowl LIX, both opening and current, as well as some insights about some big teams.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs may have solved the wide receiver problem that appeared when Rashee Rice likely earned a multiple-game suspension thanks to his legal problems in Dallas. How? They drafted Xavier Worthy and picked up Hollywood Brown via free agency. They haven’t had a 1,000-yard wideout since Tyreek Hill went to Miami, but one of those two could hit the mark. Skyy Moore and Kadarius Toney both struggled in 2023; Toney’s problems with ball security were so bad that the team basically turned away from him in the postseason. So depth could be an issue, but Moore and Toney could also draw motivation from their subpar campaigns and improve.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers brought in both Chase Young and Randy Gregory to take some of the pressure off Nick Bosa in the pass rush. However, they didn’t make much of a contribution; other than Bosa, the other defensive ends on the roster only combined for 11 sacks and 49 pressures over the course of the season. In free agency, the 49ers added Leonard Floyd, who has four straight seasons with nine or more sacks, as well as Yetur Gross-Matos, a depth addition who can play more than one spot on the D-line.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens got Nate Wiggins in the draft at No. 30 and also brought in T.J. Tampa in the fourth round. Tampa was arguably good enough to go in the second round, but the Ravens walked away with two solid cornerbacks. The starting corners, Brandon Stephens and Marlon Humphrey, are back for 2024, but this adds quality at nickel corner and depth. The team liked both of the incoming rookies’ length and hands in press coverage.

Detroit Lions

The Lions made it all the way to the NFC Championship last year despite having a secondary that got torched on the regular. They permitted 28 passing touchdowns, the sixth-worst number in the NFL. In the draft, Detroit responded by picking defensive backs in the first two rounds: Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. The team also added Amik Robertson and Carlton Davis III to the secondary via free agency. Now, instead of holes in the defense, the Lions have a lot of competition for the starting slots.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles also improved their secondary, signing C.J. Gardner-Johnson in free agency to fill the safety slot. In the draft, they used their first two picks on DBs Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, and they could feature three new starters in their secondary this year. The Eagles’ defense permitted 35 passing touchdowns last year, which had them 31st in the league. Corners James Bradberry and Darius Slay are both older than 30, so finding depth and future replacements was a priority.

Houston Texans

The Texans added skill via trade, bringing tailback Joe Mixon and wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Since 2020, Diggs has 37 receiving touchdowns and 5,372 receiving yards, both of which rank fourth in the NFL. He leads all receivers with 445 catches over that same time frame. Mixon has 1,131 receiving yards over the last three seasons, making him a threat out of the backfield. The Texans already had Tank Dell and Nico Collins at wide receiver, along with tight end Dalton Schultz, so the ceiling on C.J. Stroud’s passing game has just increased since last season’s AFC South crown and shocking upset of Cleveland in the wild-card game.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins already had an elite duo in the pass rush with Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips, but they went out and got depth. Shaqui Barrett came in via free agency, and the team drafted Chop Robinson in the first round and Mohamed Kamara in the fifth. Chubb and Phillips both had their 2023 seasons end early due to injury, so the rookies might have to step in early. Once Chubb and Phillips return, this unit will be scary.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills have had massive change on the roster, losing Diggs along with Mitch Morse and Jordan Poyer. The Bills addressed the losses by adding 10 players in the draft. Because of the large number of holes in the depth chart, this is a year when later draft picks have a better chance of making the roster than they do in most years.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals had a hard time in the secondary last year, particularly with their safety group. They re-inked Vonn Bell and brought in Geno Stone via free agency, so that pairing should be better. Stone picked up off seven passes for Baltimore last year, and Bell was a Bengal from 2020-2022 and will improve the communication at the back of the defense. Jordan Battle enters his second season and should develop as this season goes by.

Green Bay Packers

The Packers also improved their safety group by basically cleaning out the cupboard and reloading. In free agency they gave Xavier McKinney a four-year deal worth $68 million. In the draft, they took Javon Bullard (second round), Evan Williams (fourth) and Kitan Oladapo (fifth) after saying good-bye to Rudy Ford, Jonathan Owens, and Darnell Savage, who were on the field for almost 2,000 combined snaps last season.

Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys have lost key players at tailback, O-line, D-line, wide receiver, and the secondary. They did add Eric Kendricks via free agency at linebacker, and DeMarvion Overshown will return to the linebacker group from a knee injury. They picked up a couple of promising offensive linemen in the draft. I’m not placing any bets on Dallas in the futures market, though. It just isn’t worth it.

Cleveland Browns

The Browns have largely re-signed their own players, but one significant addition was their trade for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy. He joins Amari Cooper and tight end David Njoku. Jeudy put up six yards after catch per reception in 2023, which was ninth in the NFL among the 77 wideouts with 50 or more targets.
