Why should you bet on the Titans?

The tailback duo of Derrick Henry and DeMarco Murray give the Titans real offensive balance, and with the mobility of quarterback Marcus Mariota, the Titans keep teams from pinning their ears back on the pass rush because they have to stay honest against Mariota scrambling. That run-first approach has taken some of the heat off Mariota in the passing game, which has been helpful, given his propensity to throw the ball to the other team at points early this season. Henry galloped for a 75-yard touchdown against the Colts to seal last week’s win. The Tennessee defense works by committee, lacking any real stars either in the front seven or in the secondary. They take a bend-but-don’t-break approach, as teams have some success moving the ball between the 30 yard lines but then see things break down in the red zone. The Colts were only able to find the end zone once in last week’s game, as the Titans held them to field goals on their other deep possessions.

Why should you put your money on the Cardinals?

Adding Adrian Peterson to the backfield looked like it would give the Cardinals’ offense a boost, but he has only averaged 3.5 yards per carry. Larry Fitzgerald has hauled in 82 passes this season, including five touchdown receptions. Given that the Cardinals have lost Palmer and now Drew Stanton to injury, they are starting Blaine Gabbert (that’s right, the former San Francisco starter is now third on the Arizona depth chart). Gabbert took some punishment last week, taking six sacks and throwing a pair of picks in efforts to avoid more physical punishment. If he can find Fitzgerald, Gabbert could keep the ball moving down the field, but that’s an iffy proposition now. The Cardinals have veteran players on defense, but they are having a hard time staying motivated and keeping the energy to finish games. It’s hard to maintain that edge when the offense keeps producing three-and-outs, and that’s what happens when you’re down to your third quarterback. If you like the Cardinals, you see Tennessee coming in overconfident and playing down to the level of the Cardinals, with Arizona seizing the win late.

Expert Pick and Final Prediction

Bringing DeMarco Murray to town really gave the Titan offense balance two years ago, and the streak that the Titans are on now shows that the plan that the team put into place is starting to click. I am a big fan of what Arizona was doing before Carson Palmer went down with his broken arm, but as teams have shown over the last few years (with some notable exceptions) it is very difficult to keep playing at a high level without your starting signal-caller. I predict a final score of Tennessee 27, Arizona 16. The Cardinals need to start thinking about their next franchise quarterback, while the Titans need to start thinking about how to continue this consistency once the opposition gets tougher in the postseason.
