Texans vs Falcons Odds, Analysis and Prediction for Week 5

If you thought the Houston Texans would be in first place in the AFC South after four weeks, you were likely in a small minority…and you would also be correct. In fact, every team in the division is in first, with identical 2-2 records. Their Week 4 win was a rout, in fact, as the Texans demolished the Pittsburgh Steelers, 30-6. Head coach DeMeco Ryans gave every player on the roster a game ball because of the complete play of the whole roster. The second and third overall draft picks, quarterback C.J. Stroud and EDGE rusher Will Anderson, have already become the most important players on offense and defense. Stroud has six touchdown passes without a pick, a 100.6 quarterback rating, and a passing game that is fourth in the league. Why should you bet on the Houston Texans?

Houston started the season 0-2 and has a nice two-game winning streak going. Their first win was a 37-17 thumping of the Jacksonville Jaguars in Florida, ahead of that demolition of the Steelers last week. Stroud has thrown for at least 280 yards in three straight games, with a total of 1,212 yards already. The running game hasn’t been much of a factor. Dameon Pierce ran for 81 yards last week, but that only gave him 181 total yards on the season.

Wide receiver Nico Collins has 428 receiving yards, leading that group for the Texans. On defense, the Texans have improved dramatically since that Week 2 loss to the Colts, holding the Jaguars and Steelers to 23 combined points – and limiting the Steelers to just 225 yards of total offense. The pass defense is ninth in the league, and that’s been with a pass rush that has posted only seven sacks. Their scoring offense (24 points per game) is ranked 15th, while they are 11th in scoring defense (19.8 points permitted per game).

Why should you put your money on the Atlanta Falcons?

The Falcons are also 2-2, but their two wins came at the start of the season as they beat Carolina and Green Bay at home. Then came a two-game road trip, starting with a 20-6 loss in Detroit and finishing with a 23-7 loss to Jacksonville in London. Quarterback Desmond Ridder only completed 55% of his passes against Detroit and only threw for 191 yards against Jacksonville. Through four games, Ridder has just 744 passing yards and a 3:3 TD:INT ratio.

Tailback Bijan Robinson has already run for more than 100 yards in two different games this season, giving him 318 yards on the season, averaging six yards per attempt. Jonnu Smith is the top receiver with 179 yards, including 95 in the loss to Jacksonville. However, the Falcons’ offense has only put up 13 points in their last two games. On defense, the Falcons have not allowed more than 24 points in any game. The Detroit offense has been stacking up points on teams, but they only managed 20 against the Falcons. The pass defense ranks fifth in the NFL, but the rushing defense is just 17th.

Texans vs Falcons Final Score and Prediction

The Houston offense is cooking, but Atlanta will cool Stroud off a bit as their secondary is one of the better ones he will face during the early part of the season. However, the Texans’ defense should be able to manage an Atlanta team struggling to move the ball. I predict a final score of Houston 23, Atlanta 20.
