NFL Thanksgiving Must-Bet Games, Analysis and Prediction

The tradition of playing NFL games on Thanksgiving Day goes back decades and began with one contest hosted by the Detroit Lions. In the years since then, that tradition grew to include a second game, hosted by the Dallas Cowboys, and a third prime-time game. This year the schedule will add a fourth game set for Black Friday as the league tries to make its content available just about whenever people might be off work and sitting in front of a television. Let’s look at the four matchups as you think about taking advantage of potential imbalances in the NFL betting lines.

NFL Betting News: Early Thanksgiving Day Preview

Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions

Week 12
When: Thursday, November 23 at 12:30 pm ET
Where: Ford Field, Detroit, MI
TV / Streaming: FOX
NFL Odds: Green Bay Packers (+4.5) vs Detroit Lions

If you are shocked to see the Green Bay Packers heading to Detroit as road underdogs, remember that the NFC North is no longer the property of Aaron Rodgers. The gunslinger is playing for the Jets these days, and we don’t know what Jordan Love will be able to do with the Packers’ offense. We also have a Detroit team that not only went on a tear in the second half of 2022, getting within a whisker of the last wild card berth after a dreadful first half, but also stopped the Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 18 last year – with Rodgers at the helm, and with a playoff berth awaiting Green Bay with a win. The Lions didn’t do themselves a lot of favors in the draft or the off-season, but they approach 2023 with a lot of swagger. Lions to win and cover.

Washington Commanders at Dallas Cowboys

Week 12
When: Thursday, November 23 at 4:30 pm ET
Where: AT&T Stadium, Arlington, TX
TV / Streaming: CBS
NFL Odds: Washington Commanders (+7) vs Dallas Cowboys

The Washington Commanders have a way of sneaking into Dallas and dealing the Cowboys some humiliation, but the Cowboys have also routed the Commanders badly in recent years. Sam Howell led the Commanders to a Week 18 demolition of Dallas last season, but the game was largely meaningless as the Cowboys had clinched a wild card spot but could not win the NFC East. The Cowboys added Brandin Cooks at wide receiver to fill a need and made their front seven on defense even better through the draft. Washington should have a really tough time moving the ball with an inexperienced quarterback. Shouldn’t they? Cowboys to win and cover.

San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks

Week 12
When: Thursday, November 23 at 8:20 pm ET
Where: Lumen Field, Seattle, WA
TV / Streaming: NBC
NFL Odds: San Francisco 49ers (-1) vs Seattle Seahawks

Yes, the 49ers still have Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey. What we don’t know is what they have at quarterback. Brock Purdy is supposed to come back healthy at some point, but he’s not there yet, and we haven’t seen Trey Lance since he went down with a foot injury in a Soldier Field monsoon in Week 1 last year. The Seattle Seahawks extended Geno Smith in the offseason, and their running game is surprisingly solid. The defense, as is the case with all Pete Carroll teams, is aggressive and hits hard. Should the 49ers really be road favorites without a real sense of their quarterback situation? Seahawks to cover.

Miami Dolphins at N.Y. Jets

Week 12
When: Friday, November 24 at 3:00 pm ET
Where: MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, NJ
TV / Streaming: Prime Video
NFL Odds: Miami Dolphins (+3) vs N.Y. Jets

The Jets had a terrific defense last year, and Allen Lazard has joined the wide receiving group to give Aaron Rodgers a familiar target. Tailback Breece Hall blew his ACL in October of his rookie campaign but was showing signs of brilliance before he went down. Hall is still witing for full clearance but has indicated a goal of returning for Week 1. The Dolphins shored up their secondary and still have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle running routes for Tua Tagovailoa. How durable will Tagovailoa be in 2023 after at least two significant concussions last season? What will the Dolphins’ offense look like by Week 12? Jets to win and cover.
