NFL Titans vs Saints Odds, Analysis and Prediction for Week 1

Written by on September 10, 2023

When the NFL Titans vs Saints meet on Sunday, Tennessee’s tailback Derrick Henry will reach a rare milestone – playing against every team in the league except for the team that originally drafted him. That speaks to longevity at a position that tends to wear down those who play it. He will be pursuing franchise records with a team that also had the likes of Earl Campbell, Chris Johnson, and Eddie George. If he gets more than 250 yards this season, he will move past Earl Campbell for career rushing yardage. To pass Eddie George, he would need 1,675 yards. We don’t know how much gas Henry has in the tank, but his underrated performance last year should get more press now that the offense will be more friendly to the talents of Ryan Tannehill. Let’s break down this Week 1 matchup as you plan your weekend’s NFL betting.

Why should you bet on the Titans?

The Titans started the 2022 season on a 7-3 tear…and finished 7-10. Of those seven straight losses, four were in one-score games, but that streak dropped them out of the postseason. If they had managed to hold onto the ball for the last three minutes of regulation against Jacksonville in Week 18, they would have won the AFC South, but a scoop and score by the Jaguar defense wrecked those hopes. The Titans basically played 2023 without a top wide receiver and paid the price, but they added DeAndre Hopkins in the offseason, so Ryan Tannehill will have a quality target once again.

Derrick Henry did run for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns last year, and he has Tyjae Spears spelling him at times. Moving Henry to a more collaborative role might end up putting fewer miles on those legs, and if the passing game can hold its own, he shouldn’t have to carry the offense. The O-line will have some problems for the first six weeks as starting right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere has to serve a suspension for violating the NFL gambling guidelines, but do the Saints have enough on defense to make the Titans pay?

Why should you put your money on the Saints?

The Saints also finished 7-10 last year, primarily because of a lack of consistent quarterback play. The team had Jameis Winston and Andy Dalton at the position; Winston had problems with ball security, and Dalton had problems sustaining drives. This time around, the team has Derek Carr to run the offense; he threw for 3,522 yards and posted a 24:14 TD:INT ratio before being benched in favor of Jarrett Stidham. Tailback Jamaal Williams came to town via free agency after running for 1,066 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2022 for the Detroit Lions. Tailback Kendre Miller from TCU will help share the load until Alvin Kamara’s three-game suspension is done. Michael Thomas is back after missing a lot of the last two seasons with injuries, and Chris Olave returns after picking up 1,042 receiving yards and catching four touchdown passes last year.

On defense, the Saints were ninth in scoring defense, permitting 20.3 points per game, and if they can stay near that level, they should be able to get above .500 with their improved quarterback situation. J.T. Gray (shoulder) is the only defensive player on the Saints’ injury report, so that unit should be ready to go.

Final Score and Prediction

I think that Derrick Henry will open up the Saints’ defense, and Ryan Tannehill should be able to do some damage with DeAndre Hopkins on the team. Derek Carr is an improvement at quarterback for the Saints, but I’m not sure the rest of the skill position players are ready to make the jump – until Kamara returns, at least. I like the Titans to ground out a 20-16 win.
