NFL Betting Lines: Top Rivalries of all Time to Win Big

As a league with a history that extends more than a century, the NFL has some of the most historic rivalries of any of the North American sports leagues. Many rivalries are renewed twice a year as part of divisional play – and something a third time if the teams meet in the postseason. Other rivalries only turn up in the playoffs, and still others happen during less frequent interconference meetings. Let’s look at some of the top NFL rivalries of all time and discuss when – or even if – they will be renewed in 2023, so you can decide whether to incorporate them in your NFL betting for the season.

NFL Betting News: The NFL’s Best Rivalries, Will They Play in 2023?

Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears

Week 1 and Week 18

This is a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1921, when the Chicago Bears were actually called the Decatur Staleys. The teams have met 206 times, and the Packers lead the all-time series, 105-95-6. The Packers have been the better team for a couple of decades, but the early decades of the series were so dominated by the Bears that the Pack didn’t pull ahead until 2017. Chicago is only 30 miles from the state of Wisconsin, and there is an intense dislike between the Green Bay “cheeseheads” and their Illinois counterparts. The departure of Aaron Rodgers from Green Bay and the arrival of Justin Fields in Chicago has Bears fans hopeful that the series will start to turn back in their favor.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Dallas Cowboys

Next scheduled meeting: 2024 regular season

The Steelers and Cowboys have met 33 times, and the Cowboys hold the all-time edge, 17-16. They have met three times in the postseason – all Super Bowl matchups as the teams are in different conferences. Pittsburgh beat Dallas in Super Bowls X and XIII by a combined eight points; Dallas returned the favor in Super Bowl XXX, winning, 27-17. That was the last time that the Cowboys appeared in a conference championship, let alone a Super Bowl, while the Steelers have won two since then, Super Bowls XL and XLIII. Both teams are in tough divisions, and it’s hard to see them making the playoffs except as wild-card teams. Once you get into the playoffs, of course, anything can happen; could 2024 bring us the fourth Cowboys-Steelers Super Bowl?

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Cincinnati Bengals

Weeks 12 and 16

The AFC North is marked by ferocious rivalries up and down the division, but the one between the Steelers and the Bengals. The Steelers have dominated the rivalry, winning 68 of the 107 meetings all time (including 11 in a row between 2015 and 2020) and both of the postseason meetings. The Bengals’ best moments in the series came in the 1980s and then in the past three seasons after the arrival of Joe Burrow and the retirement of Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers won a wacky game in Week 1 last season as Burrow threw three interceptions in the early going, only to figure things out and to lead multiple scoring drivers in a terrific comeback. However, the Bengals’ long snapper was injured in the game, and the emergency long snapper had issues on the extra point try that would have won the game at the end of regulation and a field goal try that would have won the game in overtime.

Washington Commanders vs Philadelphia Eagles

Weeks 4 and 8

This rivalry dates back to 1934 and includes 178 meetings all time. Washington dominated the early years in the series as well as the 1980s and some of the 1990s, while the Eagles have dominated recent years. Washington leads the all-time series, 89-83-6, and won the only postseason meeting, a 1990 wild-card playoff game. 1990 was also the year of the notorious “Body Bag Game” – before the game, Eagles coach Buddy Ryan promised that Washington would leave the field in body bags, and nine Washington players ended up injured in the game. This time around, the Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC East, while the Commanders are in rebuild mode with new quarterback Sam Howell.
