At this point in the 2020 regular season, the AFC looks like the stronger of the two conferences in the NFL. With Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Kansas City, Tennessee, Indianapolis, and possibly even Miami or Cleveland, there are a number of solid contenders in the AFC. The NFC has the likes of New Orleans, Seattle, Green Bay, the Rams and Tampa Bay, but all of those teams have flaws that an AFC contender is likely to expose in the Super Bowl.
As you plan your futures NFL betting, let’s take a look at each team’s odds to win their conference after Week 12.

The Kansas City Chiefs can be frustrating for sports bettors. However, when it comes to delivering wins, they are reliable. It’s that backdoor cover you have to watch out for, like in the Tampa Bay game last week, where they roared out to a 17-0 lead and held on for a 27-24 win, giving the Bucs the cover. However, can you think of another team that can snap its fingers and deliver points and wins on demand like the Chiefs can?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are the last unbeaten team in the league. They’ve had their moments of struggle, such as when they went into the fourth quarter in Dallas trailing the hapless Cowboys, only to come back and win. Their offense is not explosive, but is patient and delivers results. I like their defense more than I like Kansas City’s unit. Pittsburgh-Kansas City would be a terrific AFC title game.
The Green Bay Packers are pretenders. Yes, Aaron Rodgers is playing terrifically, especially for a 35-year-old. However, they have exactly one win against a winning team, and as we saw against the Indianapolis Colts, their defense cannot get stops against contenders when they need to in order to deliver a win. That’s the same wall the Packers ran into in San Francisco in last year’s NFC Championship. Until the defense improves (and Rodgers has better talent at wide receiver), the Packers are not going to a Super Bowl.
The New Orleans Saints face a real question with the health of Drew Brees. He still doesn’t have a clear timetable to return, with over 10 fractured ribs and a collapsed lung — and he’s 41 years old. Taysom Hill did not look effective against Denver, at least from a passing perspective, and we don’t know what Jameis Winston has left in the tank. The run defense is stout, and so is the running game, but an interesting feature of having Hill at quarterback is that Alvin Kamara vanishes from the offense altogether — not something that Sean Payton would like to see down the stretch. So they have a great shot at winning the NFC South, but how far will they go if Brees can’t return, or if he returns and is limited?
The Seattle Seahawks have turned a corner on defense, thanks to a rejuvenated pass rush. The injury to Carlos Dunlap is concerning, but even without him, the Seahawks got after the quarterback in Philadelphia. Russell Wilson seems to have gotten through a high-turnover phase in mid-season, and the Seahawks look poised to make a run. With no team looking particularly dominant in the NFC, this year is as good as any for them to make a deep run.
