As we move into the second half of the 2020 NFL regular season, it’s time to take an updated look at each team’s odds to win the Super Bowl. Some of the contenders aren’t surprises, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers, but some teams we expected to be near the top have suffered significant injuries, such as the San Francisco 49ers, and some teams have overperformed, like the Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are the lone unbeaten team in the NFL, but they’re still not the top favorite, because it remains to be seen how they would deal with the Chiefs’ passing offense. Ben Roethlisberger has returned to lead the offense with a steady hand, but the strength of the Steelers is their ability to shut down opposing offenses while maintaining a grinding rhythm when they have the ball. They are methodical, while the Chiefs are flashy.
The Kansas City Chiefs can pile up the points against just about any scheme. When their defense doesn’t show up, though, things can get ugly. We saw this before the bye, when the Chiefs barely escaped the Carolina Panthers, and when the Chiefs lost to the Las Vegas Raiders at home. Against Las Vegas, the team didn’t rush the passer and didn’t cover well, so the Raiders were able to make four passing plays of 40 or more yards and hang 40 points. We’ll see if the Chiefs have solved those problems on Sunday night, when they head to Vegas.
The Green Bay Packers have gotten yet another terrific season out of Aaron Rodgers. The team still needs a top wide receiver option across the formation of Davante Adams if the team wants a shot at a title, and no one has emerged yet. That hasn’t kept the Packers from stacking up wins, but they only have one win against a .500 team. The beating they took in Tampa Bay showed a lot of their vulnerabilities, such as a susceptibility to the pass rush and an ongoing inability to stop the running game.
The Baltimore Ravens showed in their loss to New England why they still have a lot of flaws that had emerged against the Tennessee Titans in last year’s playoff loss. When they fall behind, they have a difficult time catching up; Lamar Jackson has a hard time leading a pass-first offense. We saw this near the end of the first half when Jackson threw a costly pick. It didn’t help that the Ravens failed to add a top wide receiver in the off-season. They haven’t given SMU product James Proche many touches in the offense, and while the team did add Dez Bryant, his time away from the game may keep him from contributing much.
The New Orleans Saints likely wish they could have beaten Green Bay in Week 3, as that game could cause major seeding issues in the playoffs if the Packers keep winning in the second half. Saints fans have to be curious as to whether Jameis Winston will be able to lead the offense without the same interception troubles that dogged him when he led the Tampa Bay offense, as Drew Brees is out indefinitely with five fractured ribs and a collapsed lung.
