Tampa Bay was able to keep all of their major contributors from the team that won Super Bowl LV, which means that they still have that terrific talent and depth on both sides of the ball. Now that Tom Brady has had a full off-season to learn the offense and connect with his skill players, the offense could be even better than last season — if it is hungry enough.
Kansas City revamped their entire offensive line. They have established stars at left tackle (Orlando Brown Jr) and left guard (Joe Thuney). They added three blue-chip rookies at center (Creed Humphrey), right guard (Trey Smith) and right tackle (Lucas Niang). If the group meshes well, then the O-line could be dominant, and a dominant line means huge numbers for Patrick Mahomes.
Buffalo looks ready to join the other high-octane offenses in the NFL. In 33 plays during the first half of the Bills’ game last week against Green Bay, the Bills threw the ball 28 times. Josh Allen went 20 of 26 on those plays for 194 yards and a pair of scores. The Bills’ defense is also stout; the only real order of business during the off-season was to amp up that pass rush. Carlos Basham, Gregory Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa are at the top of that depth chart, and if they can get to quarterbacks, the Bills could represent the AFC in the Super Bowl for the first time in 28 years.
Baltimore just lost their top running back, as J.K. Dobbins blew out his ACL and is done for the season. Rookie Rashod Bateman has a groin injury that has him on the IR to start the season, which means that the likes of Le’Veon Bell have come to town to work out for the Ravens. Without a rushing game, opposing defenses will have a lot easier time slowing down Lamar Jackson. The pass rushers are getting long in the tooth on this team, so while the coaching staff is still elite, you have to wonder if this is a team ready to regress.
Cleveland looks ready to supplant Baltimore and Pittsburgh in the AFC North. The defense has playmakers at all three levels, and the pass rush is terrific. On offense, Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb can pound the ball, and quarterback Baker Mayfield has grown into a big-play quarterback, and he has two elite targets in Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr. The Browns got one monkey off their back last year, beating Pittsburgh on the road in the wild card round of the playoffs. Next up — they must find a way around their mental demons when it comes to playing the Ravens.
