Super Bowl LV is just three weeks away now, and we’ve narrowed down the postseason field to eight teams, with the divisional playoff games set for this weekend. The Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers have the best odds to win the Super Bowl, in part because of their superior records and the fact that they didn’t have to play in the wild card round.
Let’s take a look at the latest NFL betting odds for each of the eight teams left in the bracket as you consider your wagering options.
NFL News: Updated Super Bowl Odds
Kansas City Chiefs | +200 |
Green Bay Packers | +400 |
Buffalo Bills | +550 |
New Orleans Saints | +600 |
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens | +800 |
Los Angeles Rams | +1800 |
Cleveland Browns | +2500 |
Note that the bottom two teams in the odds (the Rams and Browns) have their next matchup against the top seeds in their conferences (the Packers and the Chiefs, respectively). Let’s talk briefly about those two matchups.
In the case of Green Bay vs Los Angeles, there are several factors stacked against the visiting Rams. Yes, they were able to shut down the Seattle offense in the wild card round, and Jared Goff came off the bench to lead his team to a victory. However, the flaws that had become apparent in Seattle’s defense in the middle of the season came back in full force, as they could not stop Cam Akers in the running game, they could not cover receivers down the field, and they could not get pressure on Goff. Without the defense working in any of those three areas, it was not a surprise that they lost. Add in the fact that Russell Wilson threw a ridiculous pick-six and that the Seahawks’ offensive line could not slow down the Rams’ pass rush, even after Aaron Donald left with a rib injury, and you have a recipe for disaster.
However, the Rams will now have to play either in snow or an extremely cold and dry day. That’s not a good thing if you have injured ribs or three pins in your surgically repaired thumb, and the Rams are not used to the cold weather as a team. So Green Bay has, in my opinion, two fairly easy shots at this, with the Rams coming this week and the winners of Tampa Bay vs New Orleans coming next week. None of those teams are cold-weather teams, although Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Antonio Brown should be accustomed to it. Even so, the Packers look like they have easy sledding to the Super Bowl.
And what about New Orleans vs Tampa Bay? The Saints have folded several postseasons in a row now, and this week they face Tom Brady needing to beat him a third time in the same season to advance to the conference championship. The Saints’ defense was stout against Chicago, but the Buccaneers have a lot more weapons on offense. The Bears’ defense is better than Tampa Bay’s, but the lack of offensive production from the Bears just wore their defense down. I like the Bucs here.
In the AFC bracket, Cleveland vs Kansas City looks like a game that will start with the Browns jumping out to an early lead. It won’t be as big as the 28-0 chasm that the Steelers fell into, but it will require the Chiefs to do a lot of work in the second half. I think Patrick Mahomes will be able to bring his team back against an iffy Browns’ secondary and a plodding Cleveland offense, but as long as that line stays in double figures, I like the Browns to cover.
The most interesting matchup this weekend will feature Buffalo vs Baltimore. You have two hot quarterbacks, in Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, with Jackson hotter in the running game while Allen is hotter in the passing game. This will be a game of who can get stops, as I see this turning into a bit of a track meet. I like the Bills, but it won’t be easy. I also think the winner of this game will beat Kansas City at Arrowhead next week.
