The NFL draft will take place as scheduled, between April 23 and 25, despite the fact that teams have not been able to conduct their normal range of scouting activities due to the spread of the coronavirus. The draft had been set for Las Vegas but will now take place remotely, as the practice of social distancing means that lavish events like that are on hold for now. The first wave of free agency has been an exciting one for fans in a lot of cities. Philip Rivers and Tom Brady, two iconic quarterbacks who had been with their teams for the better part of two decades each, are now in new homes, trying to jump-start their careers. Sports betting on NFL futures is still available for a wide variety of props, including picking the team that you think will win Super Bowl LV. The Kansas City Chiefs have not done a whole lot so far in the free agency and trade markets, which makes sense, given that they did not lose any big pieces except for Kendall Fuller, a plus defender who is now in Washington. The team put the franchise tag on defensive lineman Chris Jones. Will the team keep Sammy Watkins? The Chiefs need to work hard to fit him under the salary cap.
The San Francisco 49ers took a long look at acquiring Tom Brady, but they ended up sticking with Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback. If you look at the two signal-callers’ career arcs, this is the smart move. Garoppolo is still in his learning curve and should continue to improve on his Super Bowl season. The 49ers did trade DeForest Buckner, but now they have two picks in the first round in the upcoming draft.
The Baltimore Ravens only had to give up a fifth-round pick to bring Calais Campbell to town, who will help stop people like Derrick Henry from running the ball. He was supposed to be joined by Michael Brockers, but that deal fell through, so Brockers is going back to the Rams. Edge rusher Matt Judon received the franchise tag but still could be traded. The Ravens sent tight end Hayden Hurst to Atlanta for a second-round pick, an interesting decision given Hurst’s breakout stats last year, but the Ravens are deep at tight end.
The New Orleans Saints renewed Drew Brees with a two-year extension, and he will still have Taysom Hill coming in and out of the offense. The Saints gave him a first-round tender as a restricted free agent, so losing Teddy Bridgewater to the Panthers is not as big a deal. New Orleans brought in Emmanuel Sanders to line up opposite Michael Thomas, giving Brees another great target.
The Tennessee Titans lost right tackle Jack Conklin to Cleveland, which means the Titans need to add a run blocker for Derrick Henry. The Titans put the tag on Henry and extended Ryan Tannehill, so the two key pieces of their offense are in place. Given the lack of durability for running backs, tagging Henry is the smart move. Will Tannehill catch lightning in a bottle again now that he has a big contract?
