NFL Vikings vs Eagles Odds, Analysis and Prediction for Week 2

Written by on September 13, 2023

The Minnesota Vikings finished their 2022 season with a 13-4 record and an NFC North title. They crashed out of the playoffs with a home loss to the New York Giants in the wild-card round and opened their 2023 campaign with a disappointing 20-17 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Philadelphia Eagles had a 14-3 regular season record in 2023 and won the NFC East. They advanced to the Super Bowl, where they fell to the Kansas City Chiefs. They started 2023 with a 25-20 nailbiter of a win in New England, taking advantage of an early pick-six and then holding on a rainy afternoon. The teams now meet on a short week in Philadelphia in a Thursday night showdown. Check out our NFL betting prediction before you lock in your wagers for the NFL Vikings vs Eagles game.

TNF | Why should you bet on the Vikings?

This is the second straight season in which the Vikings play in Philadelphia in prime time for Week 2. One difference from last year is that the Vikings had an 11-0 record in one-score games but are already 0-1 in that category this season after losing last week. Against Tampa Bay, the Vikings may well have rued the release of Dalvin Cook, as they needed their passing game to move the ball. Kirk Cousins went 33 of 44 for 344 yards and two scores with an interception. Justin Jefferson caught nine balls for 150 yards, and tight end T.J. Hockenson caught eight balls for 35 yards. However, Cousins fumbled the ball twice to go along with his interception. On the ground, the Vikings carried the ball 17 times but only gained 41 yards.

On defense, the Vikings were decent, limiting Tampa Bay to nine first downs and 242 total yards (168 through the air). Camryn Bynum was the top tackler with 10 stops, but the defense only managed one sack and two tackles for loss against an iffy Tampa Bay offense, and the defense failed to generate any turnovers. This time last year, the Vikings were riding the momentum of a win over the Packers but got stopped cold, 24-7, by the Eagles. Can tailback Alexander Mattison find some room to run against Philadelphia? Rhamondre Stevenson and Ezekiel Elliott had some nice carries for New England against the Eagles. The bigger questions come on defense, as the Vikings were 31st in total defense a year ago – and the Eagles’ offense has a lot more firepower than Tampa Bay’s.

TNF | Why should you put your money on the Eagles?

Philadelphia opened up a 16-0 lead on New England in Week 1 in a game that looked like it would be a laugher. The Patriots had two straight turnovers, including a pick-six, but then they came back and threatened to take a late lead before the Eagles’ defense stopped them on downs. On offense, the Eagles gained only 251 yards – but the rain was a factor. Jalen Hurts went 22 of 33 for 170 yards and a score, taking three sacks, and he also ran nine times for 37 yards. Kenneth Gainwell ran the ball 14 times for 54 yards. DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown each caught seven passes but only combined for 126 receiving yards.

On defense, Darius Slay’s pick-six was the highlight, but the Eagles ended up allowing 306 passing yards in the contest despite logging two sacks, ten quarterback pressures and seven quarterback hits. The Eagles did hold the Patriots to just 76 yards on the ground, but they could be vulnerable to the Vikings’ passing attack.

TNF Final Score and Prediction

The Vikings have covered just one time in their last eight games as an underdog. Kirk Cousins has played in 29 prime-time games in his career, covering just 11 times. With the Vikings, he has played in 16 prime-time games, covering just seven times. I’m not optimistic about what Cousins will be able to accomplish in Philadelphia as the Eagles’ defense should fix those holes in the secondary – and as Cousins’ ball security is less impressive than New England’s Mac Jones. I predict a final score of Philadelphia 34, Minnesota 17.
