Washington at Kansas City Week 4 NFL Betting Pick & Odds

Written by on September 29, 2017

The Washington Redskins take their two-game winning streak into Arrowhead Stadium against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. Washington shut down a red-hot Oakland offense a week ago, rolling to a 27-10 victory at home. Kansas City went to the West Coast and dominated the Los Angeles Chargers, picking up a 24-10 victory. These two teams have not met since 2013, when Kansas City routed the Redskins by the score of 45-10. Can the Redskins move to 3-1 and make a statement with a signature win? Or will the Chiefs bring Washington back down to earth? Right now, the Chiefs are betting favorites over the Redskins. Check out our NFL betting prediction for this prime-time matchup.

Why should you bet on the Redskins?

Kirk Cousins showed why the Washington Redskins keep giving him the franchise tag last week. He went 25 for 30 for 365 yards and three scores, without a single turnover. That gave him five touchdowns on the year and almost doubled his passing yardage total in just one week. Another hero for Washington’s offense was tailback Chris Thompson, who hauled in six passes for 150 yards and a score. If the Redskins’ offense had been firing this efficiently against Philadelphia in their opener, they likely would stand at 3-0. As it stands, they present a significant challenge to the Kansas City defense. The Washington defense might have come out somewhat underrated after their win over Oakland. They took a high-flying offense and shut it down, delivering four sacks of Derek Carr and limiting him to just 118 yards through the air, and they held Marshawn Lynch under 50 yards on the night. Alex Smith is a less mobile version of Derek Carr, although he has been more dangerous down the field than Carr has been to this point in the season. If you like the Redskins here, you see them putting the clamps on Kareem Hunt, Smith and the Kansas City offense while also using their power rushing game to wear down the Chiefs’ defense.

Why should you put your money on the Chiefs?

Alex Smith didn’t have to use deep balls to beat the Chargers last week. Instead, he reverted more to his mid-range passing game, going 16 for 21 for 155 yards with a pair of touchdowns (and no picks). That gave him seven touchdown passes on the season, and he has yet to throw a pick. Kareem Hunt was the big story once again, carrying the ball 17 times for 172 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown scamper. He leads the NFL with 401 yards on the ground through four games, averaging an eye-popping 8.5 yards per attempt. Tyreek Hill caught five passes for 77 yards and a score of his own, and these three players give the Chiefs the scariest offense they have had in the Andy Reid era. Are the Chiefs a safe betting pick? Don’t overlook that Kansas City defense, though. They picked off Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers three times last week (two of them going to Terrance Mitchell). They also bottled up the Chargers’ running game and then made Rivers run for his life when the Chargers turned to a pass-heavy approach to try and mount a comeback. The Chiefs have a pass rush that might be better than Oakland’s, so Cousins has a real task on his hands.

Expert NFL Betting Pick and Final Score Prediction

Washington impressed me with their power running game in their past two victories. I do think that the Chiefs have a better defense than either of the Redskins’ last two opponents, and I’m not sure that the Redskins can contain the Kansas City offense. I might have a different opinion if this were in Week 12, when the Redskins will have continued to develop, but for now, I see the Chiefs winning (and covering) by a score of 31-17.
