If you think you have a sense of how a particular game’s offensive and defensive nuances will work out, then wagering on the over/under point total can turn into a lucrative form of NFL betting for you. We’ve taken a look at each of the 16 contests set to unfold during NFL week 1 of the 2017 regular season. Check out our take on each matchup and see what NFL odds and lines work for you.

NFL Week 1 Over/Under Picks

Thursday, September 7

Kansas City at New England (8:30pm, NBC) — O/U 48.5

The Chiefs play at a pretty slow pace. While they should be able to grind between the 30s, though, the Patriots have the players in place to lock them down before they get close to the end zone. I see the Patriots getting between 25 and 35 points, but I don’t see the Chiefs scoring much at all. Take the under.

Sunday, September 10

N.Y. Jets at Buffalo (1:00pm, CBS) — O/U 39.5

Let’s see — two teams that struggle to move the ball. Two teams with real questions at the quarterback position, as the Jets have to choose between Josh McCown and Bryce Petty, while the Bills turn to the quarterback that they benched for Week 17 in Tyrod Taylor. Give me the under.

Jacksonville at Houston (1:00pm, CBS) — O/U 39.5

The Texans have a strong defense and an offense that could struggle to get touchdowns. The Jaguars have a shaky offense and an iffy defense. Those factors add up to a low-scoring affair. Take the under.

Pittsburgh at Cleveland (1:00pm, CBS) — O/U 46.5

I’m not sure that Cleveland will find the end zone twice against the Steelers — which means that Pittsburgh would have to break 30 to make the over. The Browns do have a young defense — which means plenty of opportunities for Big Ben. Take the over.

Arizona at Detroit (1:00pm, FOX) — O/U 48

I see Detroit making some hay against Arizona, bolstered by optimism from Matthew Stafford’s contract and a desire to finish what the team started last year. I don’t see the Lions winning the North, but I see them taking the Cardinals to the woodshed here. Give me the over.

Tampa Bay at Miami (1:00pm, FOX) — O/U 41.5

I see Tampa Bay winning big here — and it wouldn’t surprise me to see the Bucs cracking 30 all by themselves with Jameis Winston and his wideouts DeSean Jackson and Mike Evans hooking up for big yards. That means that the Dolphins won’t have to do much to get us to 42 total points. I’ll take the over.

Atlanta at Chicago (1:00pm, FOX) — O/U 49.5

Most of the scoring will happen on Atlanta’s side of the ball — I see the Falcons really taking out some frustration on the Bears in the opener. But can they get the 35-45 points they will need to carry this to the over? Yes, yes they can, with Matt Ryan and Julio Jones hooking up all afternoon. Give me the over.

Oakland at Tennessee (1:00pm, CBS) — O/U 51.5

This sounds like a track meet to me, as two of the AFC’s more exciting offenses square off — with Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr trying to win this battle of young quarterbacks. I’ll take the over.

Baltimore at Cincinnati (1:00pm, CBS) — O/U 42.5

I see this is a convincing win for the Ravens, but I don’t see them as moving the ball fast enough to score enough to hold up their end of the scoring — and I don’t see the Bengals scoring much at all. Give me the under. Are the Ravens a safe betting pick in NFL Week 1?

Philadelphia at Washington (1:00pm, FOX) — O/U 48

This feels like Oakland-Tennessee in terms of the offensive dynamic going in, as Kirk Cousins and Carson Wentz will take turns leading their teams down the field on scoring drives. I’ll take the over in this NFL Week 1 matchupnaw .

Indianapolis at L.A. Rams (4:05pm, CBS) — O/U 41.5

Can the Rams gum up the Colts’ offense enough to grind out a win? I think they can — and a 17- 16 win, or a 20-17 win, sounds perfect for this game. Go with the under.

Carolina at San Francisco (4:25pm, FOX) — O/U 48

San Francisco will be lucky to make double figures in this one. Can Carolina hang 40 on the Niners? I’m not sure that Carolina is consistent enough at this point. Take the under.

Seattle at Green Bay (4:25pm, FOX) — O/U 50.5

Seattle tends to lose focus on the road — unless it’s a situation like their trip to Foxborough last year, when they got things together and beat New England away from home. The Packers want to enter 2017 on a strong note as they pursue their latest NFC North title. This could turn into a track meet, given the problems that the Packers have on defense and the penchant Aaron Rodgers has for big scores. Go with the over.

N.Y. Giants at Dallas (8:30pm, NBC) — O/U 48

Dallas will have a hard time once again with that Giants defense that shut them down in both divisional matchups last year. The Giants may struggle running the ball, but they will find openings down the field. Even so, the scoring won’t get quite high enough in this one as both teams will make enough crucial mistakes to keep this from becoming a barnburner. Take the under.

Monday, September 11

New Orleans at Minnesota (7:10pm, ESPN) — O/U 48

The Vikings will limit the Saints on defense and then lead some sustained drives down the field. They’ll control the game, but things won’t get crazy points-wise. Go with the under.

L.A. Chargers at Denver (10:20pm, ESPN) — O/U 43.5

This game will play out a lot like the first Monday Night Football affair — with the Broncos’ defense driving the rhythm of the game, and the Denver O leading enough sustained drives to pull out the win. However, the Chargers have a little more pop on offense than the Saints do — and that total is low enough. Give me the over for this NFL Week 1 matchup.
