NFL Week 1: Seattle at Green Bay Betting Odds & Game Preview

Written by on September 8, 2017

Two division winners from the 2016 square off in the 2017 season opener, as defending NFC North champion Green Bay welcomes NFC West champion Seattle to Lambeau Field in NFL Week 1. Both of these teams saw their postseason hopes end at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons, and both teams are hoping that the core that they rode to success a year ago will be able to take them a little farther this season. Let’s check out why the Packers are favorites in the NFL odds to beat the Seahawks.

Why Should You Bet on the Seahawks?

The Legion of Boom looks ready to reassert itself as the premier defense in the NFC, as Seattle traded wideout Jermaine Kearse and a second-round draft choice in 2018 to the New York Jets, bringing back defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson in return. Richardson appeared in 58 games with the Jets, rolling up 18 sacks and 240 tackles. A defensive unit that ranked #7 against the run and #8 against the pass a year ago should be even better. On the offensive side of the ball, Russell Wilson returns free of the injuries that plagued him in the early part of the 2016 campaign. His ability to find targets like Jimmy Graham down the field after using his legs to lengthen plays, moving around in and out of the pocket while his receivers get open, make the Seattle offense extremely difficult to stop. If Seattle can force some turnovers and give themselves some short fields on offense, they could put up enough points to fend off even the most ferocious Aaron Rodgers comeback.

Why Should You Put Your Money on the Packers?

These two teams last met in Week 14 in 2016 — also at Lambeau Field — and the Packers simply dismantled the Seahawks, rolling to a 38-10 rout. Aaron Rodgers put up 246 yards through the air and threw three touchdown passes. Tailback Ty Montgomery, a converted former wide receiver, ran wild through the Seattle defense and could post another big effort in the opener. The fact that Rodgers was able to buy himself enough time to find his targets down the field does not bode well for the Seattle defense in this game, despite the addition of Richardson on the defensive line. Are the Packers a safe bet in NFL Week 1? The weakness for Green Bay comes on defense. Even with talented linebacker Clay Matthews leading the unit, the Packers have a secondary that will give up some passes down the field. Inthe teams’ last tilt, the Seahawks were unable to take advantage of the holes in the secondary — but those holes are likely to still be there. The hope for Green Bay is that their defensive line can get a push against the Seahawks’ running game and break through to put Wilson under pressure — and contain him so that he can’t win the game with his feet. If you like the Packers, then you see Seattle coming to town with the same lack of focus, and Green Bay taking advantage.

Expert NFL Week 1 Pick and Final Score Prediction

I see Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers having another big season statistically. However, against the Seahawks, the path will be a real grind, with the Seattle defense making Green Bay fight for every inch. However, I see Seattle’s offense making more mistakes against the Packer defense, making things a little easier for Green Bay to stay close. I predict Rodgers leading a late comeback drive to frustrate the Seahawks and pull out a 31-27 victory. I also see this turning into a preview of a playoff meeting later on this season, perhaps the NFC championship, as I see both teams moving past Atlanta.
