NFL Betting Odds: Chargers and Niners Go Face to Face in Saturday Night Football

Written by on December 18, 2014

The time to do anything in the AFC playoff race is growing incredibly short, with 3 of the 6 playoff spots already set in stone. Those teams that are on the outside looking in need to win out, and they also need a little bit of help along the way. One team that looked good a couple of weeks ago is now one that needs some serious help. So let’s get in the action and check the NFL betting odds for this unusual Saturday night match.
Date/time: Saturday, December 20, 8:25 PM
Location: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, California
November ended on a high note for the San Diego Chargers, as they strung together 3 straight wins to put themselves firmly in playoff contention. Things have become a whole lot colder in December though, as they have lost 2 straight and now find themselves on the outside looking in. Sure, those losses came at the hands of very good teams, losing to New England 23-14 and falling again against the Denver Broncos 22-10; but these are the types of teams that they would need to beat if they made it into the playoffs. The Chargers need some help in the final two weeks, but they can start out by helping themselves to a win this Saturday when they make a short trip in state. Let’s not try and sugar coat things here, the San Francisco 49ers are a team in total turmoil at the moment. They have a head coach, their most successful in recent history, with one foot out the door and ready to head back to college in Michigan. They have a QB who looks to be having a crisis of confidence, and they are a team that is well and truly out of the playoffs. Whoever takes over from Coach Harbaugh has the unenviable task of putting all the pieces back together again. What’s ironic is that nothing was really broken until all the chatter about the future of Harbaugh started during the off-season. BETTING ODDS This battle between California rivals looks like being a bit of a toss-up, which is why the bookies have it down as a pick ‘em play. That Chargers are 6-8 ATS this season, and are just 3-3 ATS when playing on the road. They have failed to cover in 6 of their last 7 outings. The 49ers are not much better, going 6-8 ATS and failing to cover in their last 4. These stats make it clear why the bookies have thrown up their hands on this one. Game Odds: CHARGERS: PK-110, OV 41 ½ -110 49ERS: PK-110, UN 41 ½ -110 The 49ers have looked done for weeks now, even when they still had it all to play for. The Chargers are still alive and should be motivated, which is why I think they will walk away with the win on Saturday.
