Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 13

Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 13

Written by on December 9, 2020

In another sign of how far the Dallas Cowboys have fallen in NFL status, they have been flexed out of prime time for Week 15. They were scheduled to renew one of the league’s best rivalries when they faced the San Francisco 49ers, but their game has been moved to 1:00 pm Eastern time. The Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants will play in prime time instead. Cleveland comes in at 9-3 after rolling over Tennessee, and the Giants have won five of their last seven games to turn an 0-5 start into a 5-7 record, and they have a share of the NFC East lead with Washington. Both the Cowboys and the 49ers will have backup quarterbacks leading the offense, but if the Cowboys had a shot at the playoffs, like the 49ers do, this game would likely have stayed in prime time.

NFL News: Weekly Rundown after Week 13

The Eagles seem to be Moving on from Carson Wentz.

Carson Wentz signed a four-year, $128 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles that kicks in next year. Almost $70 million of the contract is guaranteed, which means that Wentz’s future in the City of Brotherly Love is set. Right? Well, maybe not. It looks like his confidence is shot, having fallen apart in the years since his 2017 injury. Nick Foles took up where Wentz left off and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title. Wentz returned in 2018 — and Foles ended up filling in for him several times. In 2019, Wentz guided the Eagles to the playoffs, but Josh McCown had to take over for him in the playoffs. Then, the Eagles selected Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round, instead of filling any of the other needs that the Eagles had. On Sunday against the Packers, Doug Pedersen pulled Wentz for Hurts, and Hurts ended up finishing the game even though he was initially put in just for one series. Wentz has been taking way too many sacks, holding onto the ball for too long and trying to do too much. Some of those sacks have led to fumbles; against Dallas, Wentz turned the ball over four times, but luckily for the Eagles, Dallas’ offense could not get anything going. For now, though, it looks like Wentz is on the bench — and the Eagles have a terrible contract situation at quarterback.

Are the Jets Really Tanking?

The New York Jets went up on the Las Vegas Raiders, 28-24, with 5:34 remaining in regulation, seeming on the verge of ending that 11-game losing streak that has marked their season. Then the Raiders turned the ball over on downs with 1:42 left on the clock. However, the Jets could not run the clock out, so the Raiders had one more chance. On the decisive play, defensive coordinator ordered a “Cover 0” play, which means that no safety was back behind the play to assist in coverage. The Jets sent seven pass rushers, but the Raiders had “max protect” on, with seven blockers. The Jets had safety Matthias Farley up behind the box to keep Carr from being able to run a long way. However, moving the safety up meant that cornerbacks had no one behind them. Henry Ruggs III, a Raiders rookie who ran a 4.2 40-yard dash at the combine, blew by cornerback Lamar Jackson, an undrafted rookie, and Carr hit him in stride to get the win. Williams ended up paying for that gamble with his job after shock poured in from around the league, which makes you wonder if the Jets are working hard to get that top draft pick and take Trevor Lawrence, or if they are just really that bad. Either way, Adam Gase looks to be on the way out.
