Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 9

Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 9

Written by on November 4, 2020

The injury bug continues to plague the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is out again, for six to eight weeks, after a re-aggravation of his high ankle sprain. He faces possible surgery but is going to pursue a second opinion. Tight end George Kittle is out for a similar time period due to a bone fracture in his foot. Dallas is set to start its fourth quarterback of the 2020 season, as head coach Mike McCarthy announced that the team would start either Garrett Gilbert, who had success with the Orlando Apollos of the AAF, or Cooper Rush, the Cowboys’ backup quarterback last year, against Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Let’s look at the top trades ahead of the NFL deadline as you plot out your NFL betting for this weekend.

NFL News: Weekly Rundown after Week 9

San Francisco gets LB Kiko Alonso and a conditional fifth-round pick

New Orleans gets LB Kwon Alexander

Basically, the teams are swapping players who used to pick up tackles all over the field but have seen their production dwindle a bit. New Orleans gets Alexander, who doesn’t miss tackles and has blitzed successfully, while the 49ers get yet another pick in the 2021 draft. Alonso is going through recovery for a torn ACL and is not expected to play this season. The Saints add an excellent piece to a defense that was starting to fray at the edges.

The Chargers get a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft

Tennessee gets DB Desmond King

King has been on the rise since the arrival of Anthony Lynn to coach the Chargers. He is a key contributor on special teams, and he has also posted the best opposing quarterback passer rating and opposing completion percentage in his career. He’s one of the top nickel cornerbacks in the leagues — so why would the Chargers deal him? Now, Tennessee gets a great option at DB and an occasional kick and punt returner. The Chargers didn’t get nearly King’s worth here.

Kansas City gets a sixth-round pick in the 2021 draft

Miami gets RB Deandre Washington

Kansas City had a crowded backfield, made even more cramped by the arrival of Le’Veon Bell. Myles Gaskin will miss a few games for the Dolphins, who definitely could use more running game help to take pressure off rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Washington can also catch passes out of the backfield; he has several 30-catch seasons in the NFL and is dependable in terms of catch rate.

New England gets WR Isaiah Ford

Miami gets a seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft

When it comes to wide receivers in New England, it’s Julian Edelman…and that’s about it. Bill Belichick is still in buyer mode despite a 2-6 record and moribund play from Cam Newton after his return from the COVID-19 list. Ford has caught 18 balls for Miami this year, with 13 of them picking up first downs. Most of his play has come out the slot. It’s interesting that the Dolphins made this trade in the division — and didn’t want more than a seventh-round pick.

Pittsburgh gets LB Avery Williamson and a seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft

The Jets get a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft

Life is good if you’re Avery Williamson, as you just got traded from the winless Jets to the unbeaten Steelers. Williamson is a terrific tackler who will jell well as an inside linebacker position. Williamson will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, so he’s a rental for the Steelers to fill a need down the stretch. He’s not a building block for the future, but he could contribute to a title run.

Cincinnati gets center B.J. Finney and a seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft

Seattle gets DE Carlos Dunlap

Seattle won this trade, as Dunlap still has top-shelf instincts and the sort of body type that the Seahawks can incorporate into their defense. He’s not been terrific with Cincinnati, getting frozen by tailbacks sprinting to the edge. He can disrupt passing lanes and get to the passer, and the Bengals are giving away proven talent.
