The San Francisco 49ers finished the 2023 season with a 12-5 record after a meaningless Week 18 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, a game in which both teams started a number of reserves at key positions to give skill players rest going into the playoffs. The 49ers (+200) are the favorites on NFL betting odds lists to win the Super Bowl, listed ahead of the Baltimore Ravens (+300) – even though the Ravens beat the 49ers convincingly at Levi’s Stadium a couple of weeks ago. Looking at the wild-card round, let’s consider which of the wild-card teams have a chance of knocking off the 49ers in what would be a major upset in this NFL Playoff Picture.

NFC Wild Cards
5. Philadelphia Eagles
Remember when the Philadelphia Eagles were 10-1 and looked ready to skate to an NFC East title and perhaps the top seed in the conference? That seems like a year ago, and now coach Nick Sirianni might actually be on the hot seat after the Eagles have fallen off the table with an 11-6 finish that doesn’t really describe the ugly performance of their defense in losses to the Cardinals and the Giants in the last two weeks of the regular season. The secondary is getting torched, and the pass rush isn’t getting home like it was in the first two-thirds of the season. This will make it hard to get by Tampa Bay in the wild-card round, let alone the 49ers down the road. Not a chance.

6. L.A. Rams
The Rams have spent much of this season under the radar thanks to a number of factors: entering the season without Cooper Kupp healthy, seeing Matthew Stafford struggle to produce and missing time due to injury, and the comparative success of their fellow NFC West 49ers. Rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua broke two records in Week 18 – receiving yards by a rookie and catches by a rookie. The yardage record had stood since 1960, when Bill Groman picked up 1,473 receiving yards in a 14-game regular season. The catch record (104) went down in the third quarter as Nacua caught four balls for 41 yards. The Rams would go on to beat San Francisco in Week 18, 21-20, but the fact that that Matthew Stafford will have both Kupp and Nacua as options in the passing game makes the Rams the best wild-card threat in the NFC bracket. Most dangerous wild card.

7. Green Bay Packers
Green Bay’s postseason journey starts in Dallas, where the Cowboys posted a perfect 8-0 record during the regular season and averaged more than 30 points per game. A midseason shift for Dallas to a mroe aggressive approach to the passing game has turned the Cowboys’ offense into a real problem. However, the Packers have a determined duo carrying the ball in Aaron Jones and A.J. Dillon, and the Cowboys have struggled to bottle up the running game up the middle. Also, Packers quarterback Jordan Love is mobile and has a number of terrific targets at wide receiver – factors that could also give Dallas and other teams in the NFC bracket some headaches. Can they get by San Francisco, though? Mildly dangerous.
